Abu Dhabi Sets the Standard with Modular Smart Vehicles

Abu Dhabi Sets the Standard with Modular Smart Vehicles

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Abu Dhabi has made significant strides in urban transport by officially designating modular smart vehicles as a new class of road transport. This groundbreaking announcement was made during the DRIFTx 2025 event at Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week, ushering in a new era in transport policy and innovation.

Developed by NExT, these innovative vehicles can be reconfigured to connect or disconnect based on passenger demand or operational needs. This versatility optimizes traffic management, reduces congestion, and helps lower carbon emissions, paving the way for more sustainable urban commuting.

Supported by comprehensive research from top-tier institutions in New York and Abu Dhabi, and validated with international accolades and real-world testing, these vehicles have the potential to revolutionize city mobility. Unlike traditional transport options, modular smart vehicles can adjust dynamically to demands, making them ideal for both regular commutes and specialized transport requirements.

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), in collaboration with Emirates Driving Company (EDC), Liftango, and Paradigma Innovation Hub, is launching the world's inaugural pilot operation of these vehicles on Yas Island. This trial is intended to showcase the benefits of modular connectivity while setting the stage for broader integration of smart and autonomous driving technologies in the region.

In addition to immediate efficiency improvements, these vehicles also serve as a foundation for developing remote-control and autonomous capabilities, aligning with the city’s long-term vision of a fully integrated intelligent transport network. Abu Dhabi's embrace of this innovative approach further cements its reputation as a global leader in sustainable and forward-thinking mobility solutions.

With this official recognition, modular smart vehicles transition from concept to reality, poised to redefine urban transport and serve as a model for cities around the globe seeking smarter, greener, and more flexible mobility systems.
