Winners of the Abu Dhabi Future Health Challenge Unveiled in Geneva

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a milestone event hosted by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi alongside MIT Solve, the inaugural winners of the Future Health Challenge were unveiled.

This announcement, made during a live global pitch event at the World Health Assembly in Geneva, underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to enhancing predictive and preventative healthcare globally.

Global Engagement Highlights

This year, the challenge attracted a significant response with 393 submissions from 68 nations, displaying a robust interest in digital health innovations and AI-driven healthcare solutions. The initiative seeks to bolster advancements that enhance early disease detection and fortify health frameworks worldwide.

Recognizing Innovation in Healthcare

The selected winning teams were honored for leveraging technology and data to identify health risks sooner, significantly aiding decision-making within healthcare systems.

ThinkMD (Australia) – Winner (US$200,000)

ThinkMD delivers mobile clinical decision-support tools tailored for frontline healthcare professionals, enhancing patient triage, treatment effectiveness, and referrals, while also compiling real-time population health data.

Currently, over 9,000 frontline workers utilize the platform across 885 facilities, which has effectively signaled early outbreak signs, including those linked to cholera in Zambia.

Vector Control Innovations (USA) – Distinguished Finalist (US$50,000)

This organization developed VectorCam, an AI-driven mosquito surveillance tool that aids in early detection of mosquito population changes and outbreak threats.

Field studies have demonstrated substantial increases in data quality and reporting efficiency, with completeness jumping from approximately 60% to over 90%, empowering health teams to react swiftly to disease risks.

Huna (Brazil) – Distinguished Finalist (US$50,000)

Huna employs AI to scrutinize routine blood test data, identifying individuals at heightened cancer risk in the early stages.

In Brazil, the system has reached over 500,000 patients and has successfully flagged numerous cancer cases earlier, improving treatment outcomes and decreasing long-term healthcare expenses.

Vision of the Initiative

Officials highlighted that this challenge signifies a global transition towards data-driven healthcare systems emphasizing early detection and prevention.

Dr. Asma Al Mannaei from the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi pointed out that many healthcare systems primarily identify diseases post-appearance, complicating treatment options. She stressed the potential of new technologies in risk specification and enhancing patient care.

Hala Hanna, Executive Director of MIT Solve, emphasized the initiative’s role in uniting innovators, policymakers, and funders to expand practical solutions applicable within real-world healthcare settings.

Advancing Health Innovation

The Future Health initiative is designed to facilitate connections between innovators and supporters, enabling them to scale their solutions effectively. This aligns with Abu Dhabi’s ambition to emerge as a front-runner in intelligent and preventative healthcare systems.

Representatives from finalist and chosen teams will be invited to present their innovations at the Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit, slated for 20–22 October 2026. This event will convene global health leaders, policymakers, and investors.
