Abhishek Sharma’s 84 Leads India to Victory Over New Zealand

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Abhishek Sharma kicked off 2026 in style, smashing an electrifying 84 off merely 35 balls, propelling India to take a commanding lead in the five-match T20I series versus New Zealand. Following a stellar 2025 in T20 cricket, Sharma launched eight sixes during an adrenaline-pumping innings as India scored 238/7—marking their highest T20I total against New Zealand. The visitors fell short by 48 runs in their chase.

Despite losing two early wickets with Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan being dismissed by Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy, Sharma kept his composure, blasting four sixes in the powerplay, leading India to 68/2 in just six overs. Suryakumar Yadav also showcased aggressive batting, hitting his signature shots. Sharma reached his fifty in just 20 balls, partnering with Yadav in a formidable 99-run stand for the third wicket before Suryakumar was out.

Sharma's onslaught continued as he hit two more sixes before misplaying one in the next over. Even with eight overs to go, India maintained their aggressive approach. Shivam Dube contributed a quick six, while Hardik Pandya scored 25 runs off 16 balls. Rinku Singh wrapped up the innings strong, finishing unbeaten on 44 with two sixes and two fours against Daryl Mitchell.

In their pursuit of 239, New Zealand faced early challenges, losing Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra in the second over. Though Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman attempted to rally, hitting several boundaries, Varun Chakaravarthy eliminated Tim Robinson post-powerplay.

Phillips scored a commendable 78 off 40 deliveries, but consistent wickets pressured New Zealand. Chakaravarthy also took out Chapman, while Santner and Mitchell could only slightly close the gap. India comfortably secured a 48-run victory in the first T20I.
