Five Villagers Rescued from Cave Flooding in Laos

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Rescue teams have successfully located five out of seven villagers trapped in a flooded cave in central Laos. Efforts continue to locate the remaining two individuals.

The survivors were found on Wednesday in Xaysomboun province, approximately 125 kilometers northeast of Vientiane, according to rescuers from Laos and Thailand.

“We’ve successfully rescued 5 individuals who are all safe. Our focus now is on finding the other two,” announced the Laotian rescue team, Rescue Volunteer for People, via social media. Thai rescuer Kengkach Bangkawong confirmed the update, stating, “At 4:30 PM, we located our target and found five people. The search is ongoing for the two remaining villagers.”

Reports from the Lao Economic Daily echoed these findings, confirming that five villagers were indeed found alive.

The group of seven ventured into the cave on May 20 in pursuit of gold, but they were quickly trapped by sudden flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall, which blocked their exit.

Specialist rescue diver Mikko Paasi from Finland remarked on the extreme challenges faced by rescuers, stating they navigated “hundreds of meters of constant restrictions, floodwaters, collapse hazards, and the danger of contaminated air quality.” He characterized the cave as an “abandoned gold mine.”

It’s believed the trapped individuals are in a terminal chamber roughly 300 meters from the cave’s entrance.

A local rescuer, who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons, stated that the area is not officially owned. “Locals typically go there to dig holes and seek food,” he mentioned.

Search and rescue operations are actively ongoing as teams persist in their quest to find the two missing villagers within the perilous cave structure.
