South African authorities have initiated an inquiry into claims that Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, may have facilitated the recruitment of South African men to fight in the ongoing war in Russia. This troubling situation has raised significant alarms domestically and prompted high-level diplomatic discussions.
Reports indicate that a group of 17 South African individuals had been led to believe they were offered job training in Russia. Upon arrival, however, they were allegedly coerced into joining a Russian mercenary faction and deployed to the conflict zones in Ukraine. Alarmingly, several of these men are related by family ties.
An affidavit from Zuma's sister has surfaced, alleging that misinformation from Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla and two other associates misled these men, who had no intention of engaging in military conflict.
The police stated that their investigation is in a preliminary phase, with decisions on any potential charges pending a comprehensive evaluation of the evidence. The case has been deemed urgent given that the men are believed to be situated in perilous combat zones within eastern Ukraine.
The South African foreign ministry has confirmed its ongoing communications with both Russian and Ukrainian officials in a bid to ensure the men’s safe return. The situation is reportedly “extremely challenging,” as rescue efforts are hampered by the men's presence in active war areas.
Previously, the men, aged between 20 and 39, reached out for assistance after realizing they had been deceived. South African law explicitly forbids participation in overseas military operations without prior governmental consent, intensifying the gravity of these allegations.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, serving as a parliament member for the MK Party—established by her father—faces separate legal issues related to riots that occurred in 2021. As of now, there has been no official response to these recent claims from her or her party.
In the midst of these investigations, South African officials affirm their commitment to diplomatic channels to facilitate the men's safe return while examining the circumstances surrounding their alleged recruitment.
