Chongqing, China – An 18-year-old student has become a celebrated local figure after courageously saving an elderly couple from their burning apartment while clad only in his underwear. Zhu Ye, who attends Tongliang No. 2 Secondary School, sprang into action on the night of October 16 when flames broke out in a neighboring flat, triggered by an electric wheelchair battery explosion.
Without a moment's doubt, Zhu rushed to the scene, where he discovered the elderly couple in peril. The elderly woman was unaware that her legs were on fire, while sparks continued flying from the man’s wheelchair. Exhibiting exceptional composure, Zhu unplugged the wheelchair’s battery, fetched buckets of water from home, and began to douse the flames. He also alerted the security guards from the apartment complex to assist with the situation thereafter.
The couple initially chose to keep the incident from their daughter to spare her worry. However, the following day, security staff informed her of Zhu's bravery. Overwhelmed with gratitude, she personally visited Zhu at school to thank him with fruit and milk. She playfully remarked that she admired his valor so much that he could have been her son-in-law if she had a daughter.
Zhu mentioned that although the fire frightened him, the emergency safety techniques he learned in school guided his rapid actions to ensure the couple’s safety. His instructor remarked that this brave decision was typical of Zhu, who is known for helping classmates in need. Besides his heroism, Zhu shines as a badminton player, having clinched the district championship for two years running.
The dramatic rescue, executed in just his underwear, has awarded Zhu the endearing moniker “Underpants Man” among the locals, a testament to his bravery and swift actions.
Zhu’s inspiring story has reverberated throughout his community, underscoring the significance of practical safety education and the remarkable courage of youth ready to put their lives on the line to assist others.
