Zelensky Engages Macron in Paris for Enhanced Military Support Against Russia

Post by : Raina Nasser

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Paris on Monday to enhance Ukraine's defense amid increasing Russian missile and drone threats. This visit is part of a tour to gather support from Western allies, following an energy pact with Greece on Sunday and leading to a scheduled meeting in Spain on Tuesday.

Zelensky's discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace focused on reinforcing Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Macron reaffirmed France’s dedication to support Ukraine, mentioning that French armaments expertise would be “utilized for Ukraine's defense.” Both nations are exploring options for supplying advanced military systems essential for countering Russian threats, primarily focusing on air-defense systems.

The discussions commenced at Villacoublay air base, where they reviewed France’s Rafale fighter jets alongside the SAMP-T missile system, developed in collaboration with Italy. The SAMP-T system is designed to intercept fighter jets, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles, with an advanced version anticipated by 2027.

France has previously committed additional Aster missiles to Ukraine, deployable from both the SAMP-T and aircraft. Zelensky recently hinted in a video at a “historic agreement” in the works, aiming to finalize a significant defense deal with France. The talks also aimed at enhancing drone production, as Ukraine plans to deploy over 4.5 million drones this year, targeting both offensive and defensive operations against Russian drones.

Additionally, Zelensky and Macron visited the Mont Valerien base, part of a multinational force organized by France and Britain, which could be mobilized in Ukraine should a ceasefire occur. A coalition of 34 countries, Ukraine included, has already pledged their support.

This marks Zelensky's ninth visit to France since the onset of Russia's invasion in 2022, occurring amidst a corruption scandal regarding Ukrainian energy companies. Benjamin Haddad, France’s Europe Minister, emphasized the necessity for vigilance as Ukraine continues its EU membership endeavors.

As battlefield tensions escalate and diplomatic dynamics shift, Zelensky's interactions in Paris seek to secure advanced weaponry, bolster European backing, and ensure a robust capability for Ukraine to defend its sovereignty against ongoing Russian threats.
