Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, announced that the Zayed National Museum is scheduled to open in December 2025, coinciding with the UAE's 54th National Day celebrations. He described the museum as the centerpiece of the Saadiyat Cultural District, dedicated to narrating the nation's tale. The museum aims to showcase the UAE’s identity, history, and forward-thinking aspirations with clarity and respect for the lasting impact of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
Al Mubarak emphasized that Abu Dhabi's cultural initiatives are founded on two core beliefs: that culture fosters connections between communities and that nations thrive when they honor their heritage while advancing. He stated that Zayed National Museum will embody these values. The museum will join other significant establishments on Saadiyat Island, creating a cultural ensemble that underscores the UAE's dedication to creativity and intellectual exploration. Despite this proximity, its identity will be distinctly tied to the UAE's narrative and its people’s values.
Inside, visitors will encounter narratives that blend personal and universal themes, stretching from ancient times, spanning 300,000 years, to the modern achievements of the UAE. Key artifacts will include the Abu Dhabi Pearl, among the oldest known natural pearls, and a reconstructed Magan boat, symbolizing historic cultural exchanges. These will be showcased with multimedia installations and unique archives, making the UAE’s history vibrant for future audiences.
Al Mubarak stated that the museum will focus on the ideals and leadership qualities of Sheikh Zayed, emphasizing his passion for the environment, unity, education, and global openness. The museum is not merely about preserving the past; it aims to facilitate learning, dialogue, and international collaboration. Exhibitions will link the UAE to global narratives, exploring archaeology, sustainability, and art through the lens of national heritage.
He also lauded the architecture, designed by Foster + Partners, featuring five towers reminiscent of a falcon's wings. The structure incorporates sustainable cooling methods that showcase traditional Emirati ingenuity, honoring Sheikh Zayed’s commitment to environmentalism.
