A wave of protests swept through Mexico on Saturday, as thousands of young activists rallied under the banner of “Generation Z,” expressing their outrage at the nation’s escalating violence, corruption, and insecurity. The outcry was triggered by the shocking assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo earlier this month, reigniting public discontent over rampant crime.
In Mexico City, tensions reached a boiling point when a small group of masked demonstrators dismantled barricades around the National Palace, the official residence of President Claudia Sheinbaum. Riot police countered with tear gas, resulting in fierce confrontations in the historic city center.
Pablo Vazquez, Mexico City’s public safety secretary, reported in a press conference that 100 police officers sustained injuries, with 40 needing hospital treatment. Additionally, 20 civilians were hurt during the clashes, and authorities made 20 arrests while issuing citations to another 20 individuals for various administrative infractions.
The protests extended beyond the capital, with significant demonstrations in various cities including Michoacán, where anger is high following the November 1 killing of Mayor Carlos Manzo at a Day of the Dead event. Protesters in Uruapan chanted poignant slogans like “Carlos did not die, the government killed him,” demanding urgent government intervention.
In Mexico City, the frustration was sharply aimed at President Sheinbaum’s Morena party, with crowds chanting “Out, Morena” as they marched, demanding accountability and systemic reforms.
The protests were spearheaded by a collective known as “Generation Z Mexico,” which identifies itself as non-partisan and represents the disillusionment among young Mexicans regarding violence, abuse of power, and insufficient governmental response. While “Generation Z” typically refers to those born between 1997 and 2012, the term has been embraced globally by youth-led movements advocating for political and social change.
However, the Sheinbaum administration raised concerns about the authenticity of the protests, suggesting that right-leaning political adversaries and social media bots were manipulating the movement.
Saturday’s protests underscore the growing discontent among Mexico’s youth, who are becoming increasingly vocal regarding the country’s spiraling violence and the government's difficulties in restoring public safety. As emotions escalate and demands for reform intensify, these demonstrations signify yet another critical moment in Mexico’s struggle against crime and corruption.
With ongoing investigations and rising political tensions, the influence of Generation Z’s activism could play a crucial role in shaping Mexico’s societal and political landscape in the upcoming months.
