Masdar's Youth 4 Sustainability (Y4S) Initiative has proudly wrapped up its inaugural Mentorship Programme, aimed at inspiring and equipping youth eager to promote sustainability. Spanning 20 weeks, this initiative bridged passionate youth with seasoned experts to cultivate skills, define career aspirations, and foster impactful change in the sustainability landscape.
The programme brought together 25 aspiring leaders from 11 unique nations, matching them with mentors from 14 esteemed organizations including government agencies, global corporations, and prestigious universities. This collaboration aimed to deepen their grasp of sustainability hurdles and empower them with essential knowledge and confidence necessary to enact meaningful change back home.
Central to the program were regular individual sessions between mentors and mentees. These interactions allowed participants to exchange insights, gain real-world insights, and formulate actionable professional plans. Through these engagements, they honed crucial competencies in innovation, leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, and long-term sustainability strategy. Each mentee departed with an enhanced vision and actionable steps towards their ambitions.
Dr. Lamya Fawwaz, Masdar's Executive Director of Brand & Strategic Initiatives, underscored the programme's mission, emphasizing the importance of preparing young leaders to operate with confidence and clarity. She noted that the Y4S Mentorship Programme not only provides mentorship but also connects youth with decision-makers and vital resources they need as they navigate global sustainability challenges.
Dana Alkaabi, a participant, shared how the programme profoundly impacted her career trajectory. She remarked that it offered her a clearer path and heightened her self-assurance, encouraging her to further enhance her expertise in sustainability.
Participants hailed from a diverse array of countries including the UAE, Germany, Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, the USA, Brazil, Yemen, India, Kazakhstan, and Syria. This rich multicultural blend enriched the programme as participants exchanged ideas and learned collaboratively.
Mentors came from a variety of leading organizations such as Masdar, Siemens Energy, the UAE Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, GE Vernova, Stellr, NYU Abu Dhabi, Al Futtaim, IRENA, East Africa Carbon Markets Forum, ADNOC Group, Hub71, IKEA UAE–Qatar–Egypt–Oman, Hilton Hotels and Resorts (APAC), UAE University, and EY. Their guidance ensured that mentees received top-tier support and insights.
The initiative also emphasized its dedication to gender equity, with 64% of mentees and 60% of mentors identifying as female. This reflects the initiative's strong commitment to empowering women and promoting equal opportunities within the sustainability sector.
With the first cycle of the Y4S Mentorship Programme now complete, Masdar looks to continually foster a community of young leaders dedicated to creating a greener and more sustainable world. Plans are already underway for future expansions to provide further opportunities for youth eager to impact global environmental initiatives positively.
