Team India has finally spoken about the much-debated selection of Ayush Badoni for the One Day International series against New Zealand. The young Delhi cricketer was added to the squad after Washington Sundar was ruled out due to injury. While the decision surprised many fans and experts, the team management has now explained the thinking behind the move.
Badoni’s selection did not receive full support from all sides. Several former players and fans believed that players like Riyan Parag or Rinku Singh could have been better choices. The debate grew stronger as the series progressed, with many questioning whether Badoni was ready for international cricket at this level.
Ahead of the second ODI against New Zealand, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak addressed these concerns during a press conference. He said Badoni has earned his place through consistent performances in domestic cricket, India A matches, and the Indian Premier League. According to Kotak, the team needed a player who could both bat and bowl, especially after losing an all-rounder like Washington Sundar.
Kotak explained that teams cannot rely on just five bowlers in an ODI match. Injuries or unexpected situations can leave the team short of bowling options. He said a sixth bowling option is always important, and Badoni fits that role because he can bowl useful off-spin when needed. This, he added, makes Badoni a close replacement for Sundar in terms of balance.
The coach also pointed out that Badoni has delivered solid performances whenever he was given a chance. He has scored runs in India A one-day matches and has shown calmness under pressure. His experience in the IPL has also helped him grow as a white-ball player.
Badoni’s numbers support the team’s confidence. In 27 List A matches, he has scored 693 runs at an average of over 36, with a strike rate above 93. His record includes one century and five half-centuries. With the ball, he has taken 18 wickets while maintaining good control and economy.
During tours involving South Africa A and Australia A, Badoni showed his all-round ability. He scored a half-century against South Africa A and picked up important wickets against Australia A. These performances helped strengthen his case as a dependable squad player.
In the IPL, Badoni has played 56 matches for Lucknow Super Giants as a middle-order batter. He has scored 963 runs with a strong strike rate, proving that he can handle pressure situations and score quickly when needed.
While opinions remain divided, Team India believes the selection is based on balance, not popularity. The management has placed trust in Badoni’s skills and sees him as a player who can contribute in more than one way. For Badoni, this call-up is a major chance to prove himself at the highest level and silence the doubts surrounding his selection.
