An updated flood warning is now in effect for the Greater Sudbury area following the overflowing of the Whitson River, which has inundated several low-lying regions. Local officials are urging residents in the impacted areas to brace for potentially deteriorating conditions in the upcoming days.
Conservation Sudbury reports a rapid rise in water levels, with monitoring stations in Val Caron and Chelmsford documenting increases of up to 70 centimetres within a single day. The river has already infiltrated surrounding neighborhoods, extending beyond its banks.
The water level surge is the result of melting snow coupled with anticipated rainfall. Warmer temperatures have accelerated the snowmelt, and forecasts suggest additional rain in the next 48 hours, which could exacerbate the water situation across the area.
Authorities have raised alarms over existing flooding in certain low-lying locales, where streets and residential areas are already experiencing water pooling. Residents particularly in Val Caron and Chelmsford are advised to take protective measures and prepare for possible flooding.
Other rivers in the vicinity, such as the Onaping River, Vermilion River, and Wanapitei River, are also witnessing elevated water levels. Smaller streams are already at critical levels, heightening the risk of localized flooding.
Officials indicated that this year’s flooding may surpass the spring flooding witnessed in 2023, as the area's snowpack currently retains approximately 1.5 times the usual amount of water, leading to more runoff as temperatures continue to rise.
Residents have also been cautioned about potential safety hazards near waterways. Riverbanks are precarious, and swift currents present significant dangers, particularly with the current chilly temperatures. It is recommended that individuals steer clear of rivers, streams, and flooded regions.
Authorities will persist in close monitoring of the situation and provide further updates as conditions evolve. Residents should stay attentive to public advice, given the sustained high risk of flooding in the area.
