The Washington Post has revealed that it has fallen prey to a significant cyber breach associated with Oracle’s E-Business Suite. This incident highlights the escalating scale and sophistication of cyber-attacks targeting supply chains. In a brief statement issued on Thursday, the newspaper affirmed it was “impacted … by the Oracle E-Business Suite breach.”
The Post did not disclose many specifics, but the breach became known after the notorious ransomware group CL0P listed it among recent targets on their website. This group is believed to be behind a large-scale operation that exploits vulnerabilities within Oracle’s E-Business Suite software, utilized globally for managing customer, supplier, and logistical operations.
Cybersecurity analyses suggest this attack campaign might have started as early as mid-2025. A serious zero-day vulnerability within Oracle’s E-Business Suite enabled unauthorized remote code execution, allowing attackers to infiltrate systems and extract sensitive data. Approximately 100 organizations are estimated to be impacted.
CL0P's typical approach in such campaigns involves gaining access to enterprise applications, exfiltrating data discreetly, and then issuing threats demanding payment in exchange for the non-disclosure of stolen files.
For The Washington Post, the specific details and extent of the compromised data remain unclear. The statement did not specify which systems were affected or whether any personal or confidential subscriber information was breached.
This occurrence raises additional concerns for organizations employing legacy enterprise applications, particularly those that are internet-facing or lack appropriate security updates. The breach further emphasizes the increasingly vanishing line between vulnerabilities in software supply chains and extensive cyber-extortion schemes.
