Volkswagen has announced a strategic move to strengthen its technology foothold in China by developing an in-house chip for smart mobility. The automaker said its CARIZON joint venture with China’s Horizon Robotics will create a high-performance processor rated at about 500–700 tera operations per second (TOPS), enabling new Volkswagen models to process data streams from multiple cameras and sensors for advanced driver-assistance and autonomous systems.
The chip effort forms part of Volkswagen’s targeted R&D push in China. The company has not specified whether the processor will be integrated into cars sold outside China or how manufacturing will be organised, but it expects the component to reach production readiness within roughly three to five years. This timeframe underlines Volkswagen’s intent to close the technological gap with fast-moving local rivals.
The announcement follows a period of weakening sales in Volkswagen’s largest market. Deliveries in China dropped to about 2.75 million units in 2024, down from more than 4 million in 2018, and the group ceded its position as the country’s top-selling brand to BYD in 2023. BYD’s ascent has been driven by competitively priced electric and plug-in hybrid models that have found strong demand among cost- and climate-conscious buyers.
To bolster its product competitiveness, Volkswagen has broadened ties with Chinese technology and vehicle makers. The company cited cooperation with Xpeng to jointly develop vehicle electronics architecture across several models as an example of its localisation strategy. Investing in domestically developed chips and electronics reflects a deliberate shift to align products more closely with Chinese consumer expectations.
Market analysts say the chip programme could help Volkswagen regain ground if the technology is paired with attractive pricing and appealing vehicle designs. The move also mirrors a wider industry trend where automakers seek greater control over critical components to secure performance and supply chains for smart and electric vehicles.
Beyond technical upgrades, Volkswagen’s initiative sends a clear signal about its priorities in China. As the Chinese auto market accelerates in sophistication, the company is banking on homegrown, high-tech solutions to reconnect with buyers and rebuild its competitive position.
