Vietnam is set to achieve a remarkable influx of international travelers, with officials announcing an expectation of around 21 million tourists this year. This surge illustrates a substantial rebound for the nation’s tourism industry following the extensive disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism attributes these encouraging numbers to the renewed global confidence in Vietnam as a travel destination.
Recently, the country marked the arrival of its 20 millionth international visitor during a special event held on Phu Quoc Island. This moment underscores the rapid recovery of the tourism sector. Expectations for 2025 indicate total arrivals will likely surpass the previous high of 18 million set in 2019, prior to global travel restrictions.
According to official statistics, foreign arrivals have increased by over 19 percent compared to the previous year. Vietnam continues to draw travelers with its stunning coastlines, beautiful scenery, vibrant culture, and historic sites. These elements have firmly established the country as one of Southeast Asia's leading travel hotspots.
Despite facing several environmental challenges, tourism remains resilient. Hanoi has frequently ranked among the world's most polluted cities this year, raising air quality concerns. Additionally, heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in popular tourist areas such as Hue, Hoi An, and Nha Trang, impacting local life and travel arrangements.
Even with these obstacles, interest from visitors remains robust. Officials report that Vietnam's affordability, varied experiences, and enhanced travel services continue to attract international tourists. Tourism businesses are adapting by expanding their offerings to cater to the increased demand.
The stark contrast with pandemic years is evident, as strict border measures in 2021 resulted in fewer than 160,000 foreign visitors—the lowest in recent history. The swift recovery of the tourism sector post-restrictions highlights the eagerness of travelers to return.
Data from the National Statistics Office indicates that China has become the largest source of tourists to Vietnam in the first 11 months of this year, accounting for about 25 percent of total arrivals. Other key markets include South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, and Japan. Authorities anticipate that the momentum of Vietnam's tourism rebound will persist in the years ahead.
