Vietnam Champions Silver Economy for Empowering Seniors

Post by : Shakul

Vietnam is on a transformative path toward establishing a robust “silver economy” framework aimed at leveraging the immense potential of its increasing elderly demographic. During a national conference in Hanoi, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra highlighted the necessity of recognizing older citizens as integral contributors to the nation’s progression, rather than merely recipients of social welfare.

The event commemorated the 85th anniversary of the Traditional Day of Vietnamese Elderly People, celebrating outstanding seniors for their roles in patriotic initiatives and community advancement from 2016 to 2026. In her address to delegates nationwide, the Deputy Prime Minister underscored the historical significance of the elderly in Vietnam’s journey of nation-building and cultural heritage preservation.

Pham Thi Thanh Tra pointed out the dual challenge Vietnam faces: an aging population coupled with rapid advancements in digital technology, AI, and sustainable practices. Within this dynamic landscape, she urged a transition from traditional care models to approaches that emphasize protection, compassion, and empowerment for the elderly.

Government statistics reveal that over nine million elderly individuals in Vietnam remain actively involved in various sectors, including labor, entrepreneurship, agriculture, community leadership, and social initiatives. Their ongoing contributions to economic development, local governance, cultural preservation, and mentorship for younger generations underscore their invaluable role as national assets.

The Deputy Prime Minister urged ministries and local authorities to expedite research and initiatives focused on developing products and services that cater to an aging populace. She promoted opportunities for seniors to engage in work, mentor young professionals, share expertise, and pursue entrepreneurial ventures.

Plans to enhance healthcare services, long-term care frameworks, rehabilitation efforts, and community support systems for older adults were also highlighted. The government aims to broaden access to cultural, educational, and lifelong learning initiatives while enhancing both the material and emotional well-being of seniors throughout the nation.

Vietnamese authorities see the establishment of a strong silver economy as a crucial engine for sustainable development, aiming to uplift the quality of life for millions of seniors. Officials reiterated that the wisdom, credibility, and experience of elderly citizens will significantly influence Vietnam’s trajectory in the coming years. The conference also honored 169 exemplary seniors and awarded the Third-Class Labor Medal to the Central Office of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly for its contributions to the welfare and development of the elderly.
