Vietnam's Prime Minister Accelerates Housing Recovery Ahead of Tết

Post by : Mina Rahman

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has mandated expedited efforts under the Quang Trung Campaign, a significant reconstruction initiative aimed at restoring homes in central Vietnam before the Tết 2026 festivities and the 14th National Party Congress.

During an online conference with provincial leaders and government representatives, the Prime Minister emphasized that no household affected by the storms should remain without adequate shelter as the Lunar New Year approaches.

Reports indicate that devastating floods in central Vietnam towards the end of 2025 inflicted substantial damage, spanning regions from Quảng Trị to Lâm Đồng. A total of 1,597 structures were either destroyed or swept away, while 34,759 homes sustained damage that necessitated urgent intervention.

To combat the fallout, the government initiated the Quang Trung Campaign, engaging ministries, local authorities, businesses, and military forces in a coordinated effort to expedite the reconstruction process across the affected areas.

Officials confirmed that all 34,759 storm-damaged residences have been adequately repaired as per the housing reconstruction objectives. Out of the 1,597 homes requiring rebuilding, 1,046 are completed, achieving a progress rate of 65.5%, while remaining projects sit between 60% and 80% finished.

Local authorities affirmed that crucial infrastructure such as electricity, clean water, telecom services, and transport has been fully restored, with no significant challenges reported regarding funding, labor, or building materials in accordance with the flood recovery plan.

Most provinces aim to finish all reconstruction efforts by January 15, ahead of the National Party Congress. A few families in Lâm Đồng and Đắk Lắk are opting for larger homes, which may take additional time; however, completion is still expected before Tết 2026.

Concluding the meeting, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính commended the collaborative efforts of ministries and local authorities, remarking on how families whose homes are now repaired have begun to stabilize their day-to-day lives post-storm.

Reaffirming the government's dedication to disaster response and housing recovery, the Prime Minister urged authorities to mobilize optimal resources, especially from the armed forces and socio-political entities, ensuring no citizen is without shelter.

In addition to housing recovery, he advised localities to persist in restoring environmental sanitation and transportation infrastructure, while assessing essential needs for families to enjoy the upcoming Tết celebrations.

The Prime Minister proposed financial aid of VNĐ5 million for each household whose homes have been repaired, and VNĐ10 million for nearly 5,000 families whose residences were completely lost, aiding their return to normalcy as part of the housing recovery program.

Referring to the Quang Trung Campaign as a compassionate, community-focused initiative, the Prime Minister highlighted the significance of transparency, strict oversight, and appreciation of those who significantly contribute, while advocating for lessons learned from this flood recovery effort to inform future disaster responses.
