A court in Venezuela has imposed a lengthy 30-year prison sentence on Marggie Orozco, a 65-year-old physician, following allegations that she criticized President Nicolas Maduro via a WhatsApp voice message. Human rights organizations confirmed the verdict on Monday, indicating that Orozco faced charges including “treason, incitement to hatred, and conspiracy,” which collectively incur the harshest penalties under Venezuelan legislation. Community leaders reportedly alerted authorities to her audio message, claiming it showed disloyalty to the government, yet the actual content and recipient of the message remain undisclosed.
Orozco's arrest occurred in August 2024 in San Juan de Colon amid rising political and social unrest. This incident followed Maduro's disputed victory in the presidential elections, which triggered widespread protests and claims of fraud from opposition groups and various international observers. The political turmoil resulted in the detention of approximately 2,400 individuals, with many later released. In the aftermath, Maduro urged citizens to report those deemed “fascists,” a label frequently used to identify his political adversaries.
Human rights groups, such as the Venezuelan NGO JEP, have reported that Orozco endured two heart attacks while in custody. According to another organization, Foro Penal, around 882 people are currently classified as “political prisoners” in Venezuela. Experts in human rights argue that Orozco's situation highlights critical issues surrounding freedom of speech, the criminalization of dissent, and the misuse of national security laws against critics of the regime. They also raise concerns regarding the obscurity of the alleged audio message, questioning the legal processes and appropriateness of the punishment.
This ruling has sparked renewed discussions among global watchdogs about civil liberties in Venezuela, especially the treatment of those facing political accusations. No official comments have surfaced from the Venezuelan government about Orozco's sentencing, while advocates persist in seeking medical care and legal rights for those detained on political charges. The case underscores persistent debates over human rights, the independence of the judiciary, and digital surveillance within the nation.
