Following his confirmation as Kerala’s Chief Minister-designate, V.D. Satheesan has commenced critical discussions on the formation of the new state government. On May 15, 2026, political dynamics in Thiruvananthapuram escalated as senior United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders convened to deliberate on Cabinet structure and coalition representation.
During these strategic meetings, Satheesan had a notable engagement with former Chief Minister and current Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan at his residence, drawing significant political attention in anticipation of the new governance era shaped by the recent Assembly election outcomes.
The Congress party endured nearly ten days of uncertainty post-election before the All India Congress Committee named Satheesan as their select candidate for Chief Minister on May 14. This pivotal decision concluded intense internal dialogues within the party involving competing leaders aspiring for the top position.
Ramesh Chennithala, a prominent Congress figure who was also in contention for the Chief Minister position, publicly pledged his support for Satheesan. This move has been interpreted as a significant step towards fostering unity within the party, aiming to strengthen the UDF coalition ahead of the government formation.
Key discussions among UDF leaders revolved around Cabinet roles and necessary representation for coalition partners. Anoop Jacob of the Kerala Congress (Jacob) indicated that UDF allies expect equitable representation and that discussions regarding ministerial roles would persist in upcoming leadership meetings.
Numerous Congress members lauded Satheesan's leadership qualities and conveyed optimism about his future administration. Senior leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan emphasized that Satheesan possesses the requisite vision and capability to be an effective Chief Minister for Kerala.
In addressing the media, Satheesan highlighted the importance of preserving Kerala’s secular ethos, noting that the recent election results signify public endorsement of these values, while cautioning against divisive forces attempting to sow discord.
Moreover, he underscored that his administration would prioritize tackling the escalating living costs and economic challenges aggravated by rising fuel prices amid tensions in West Asia. He committed to working towards alleviating the financial strain on citizens and enhancing public welfare throughout Kerala.
UDF leadership is on track to finalize the broader Cabinet framework soon, preparing to officially take office and embark on a new political phase in Kerala.
