In 2025, Indian travel trends took a surprising turn. Popular holiday destinations like Goa and Gujarat were overtaken by Uttar Pradesh, which emerged as the most visited state in the country. This finding comes from Cleartrip’s Unpacked 2025 report, which studied travel searches and booking patterns across India.
The report highlights a major shift in how Indians choose their travel destinations. Instead of focusing only on beaches or luxury stays, many travellers leaned towards spiritual journeys, cultural exploration, and nature-based trips. This change helped Uttar Pradesh rise to the top of the travel charts.
According to the report, interest in travel across India grew sharply in 2025, especially among Gen Z travellers. This younger group led the trend, with a massive rise in bookings as they searched for meaningful and budget-friendly experiences. Rather than spending on expensive holidays, many chose destinations with strong cultural and spiritual value.
Uttar Pradesh benefited the most from this change. Cities like Prayagraj and Bareilly saw a strong jump in stay searches. Prayagraj recorded nearly three times more searches compared to the previous year, while Bareilly saw search interest grow almost fourfold. These numbers made Uttar Pradesh the most travelled state in 2025.
Prayagraj, earlier known as Allahabad, continues to attract visitors because of its deep religious and historical importance. The city is famous for the Triveni Sangam, where three rivers meet, and for major spiritual events that draw people from across the country. Tourists also visit landmarks such as Allahabad Fort, Khusro Bagh, Anand Bhavan, Swaraj Bhavan, and several museums, parks, and temples spread across the city.
Bareilly, located in western Uttar Pradesh, also gained attention from travellers. Known for its cultural roots and history, the city is famous for traditional crafts like cane furniture, zari embroidery, and surma. It is also an important religious centre, home to places such as Nath Nagri and Ala Hazrat, which attract devotees throughout the year.
The report also noted a rise in solo travel across India. Cities like Delhi and Bengaluru led this trend. Travellers from Delhi preferred nearby destinations such as Himachal Pradesh, Jaipur, and Agra, while those from Bengaluru leaned towards hill stations like Coorg, Ooty, and Kodaikanal.
Overall, 2025 marked a year when Indians expanded their travel map. Spiritual places, heritage cities, and peaceful destinations became more popular than ever. Uttar Pradesh’s rise as the most visited state shows how travel choices are changing, with more people looking for meaning, history, and calm rather than just leisure and luxury.
As travel trends continue to evolve, the success of Uttar Pradesh highlights the growing importance of cultural and spiritual tourism in shaping India’s travel future.
