US Peace Initiative May Force Ukraine to Surrender Territory Following Fatal Strike

Post by : Raina Nasser

A new US peace initiative may compel Ukraine to relinquish territory, scale back its military, and forgo long-range weapons. This development follows a tragic missile strike in western Ukraine that claimed the lives of 26 individuals, including three children, in Ternopil on Wednesday morning. The attack targeted residential buildings, representing one of the most devastating assaults on western Ukraine since the conflict escalated in 2022.

This proposal appears to align with Russia's stringent demands for peace, which Ukraine has persistently deemed unacceptable, equating them to capitulation. The terms may include Ukraine's acknowledgment of Crimea and other territories under Russian control, alongside reducing its armed forces to 400,000 troops. Specific concessions from Russia in exchange remain uncertain.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Turkey in efforts to reinvigorate US involvement in the peace talks, although a US envoy expected to accompany him did not arrive. Nevertheless, a prominent Pentagon delegation led by US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll arrived in Kyiv to confer with Ukrainian officials, including Defence Minister Denys Shmygal, on strategies to resolve the ongoing conflict.

Top military leader Oleksandr Syrsky described discussions with the US team as “productive,” emphasizing the urgent need to bolster air defenses, augment long-range strike abilities, and stabilize the frontline to withstand Russian offensives.

In Ternopil, rescue teams combed through the debris following the missile strikes. Elevated chlorine levels due to fires prompted officials to advise the city’s 200,000 residents to remain indoors. Among the fatalities was 20-year-old Bohdan, who perished alongside 25 others in his home. Additionally, 92 individuals, including 18 children, sustained injuries. Zelensky condemned the attack as “barbaric,” while UN human rights chief Volker Turk labeled civilian losses as “appalling.”

Currently, Russian forces are occupying about 20% of Ukraine's territory, with Moscow indicating a continuation of hostilities until Ukraine concurs with its stipulations. Ukraine anticipates that the US can exert pressure on Russia for diplomatic discussions, potentially through sanctions, while seeking to resume prisoner exchanges and other humanitarian agreements.

This tragic incident in Ternopil unfolds as winter approaches, further straining Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and military as challenges escalate at the front. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for a resumption of peace negotiations in Istanbul, albeit earlier talks this year yielded limited progress.
