In a major diplomatic development, the United States has cancelled a planned summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, citing Moscow’s refusal to compromise on hardline demands regarding Ukraine. The decision comes amid rising tensions over the war in Ukraine and stalled peace negotiations.
According to reports, the cancellation followed a tense call between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, after which Rubio informed President Trump that Russia showed no willingness to negotiate. Moscow had insisted that Ukraine cede additional territory, drastically reduce its armed forces, and commit to never joining NATO—demands that Washington and Kyiv found unacceptable.
Earlier, both Trump and Putin had agreed to meet in Hungary’s capital to discuss ways to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, Russia’s insistence on territorial concessions and other conditions prompted Washington to reconsider, highlighting the complexities of international diplomacy amid war.
President Trump has maintained support for Ukraine’s position, advocating for an immediate ceasefire along current lines, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reaffirmed that Kyiv would not withdraw troops from additional territories as Moscow demanded.
The cancelled summit underscores the persistent challenges in resolving the Ukraine conflict, with the US emphasizing diplomatic pressure and continued support for Ukraine’s sovereignty. Analysts suggest the cancellation may strain US-Russia relations further and complicate future peace negotiations.
The Budapest summit was expected to be a high-profile platform for addressing ceasefire and reconstruction talks, but Russia’s rigid stance has now left both sides seeking alternative avenues for dialogue. As tensions persist, the international community watches closely, weighing the prospects for a peaceful resolution in the region.
This cancellation signals a new phase in US-Russia diplomacy, reflecting the ongoing struggle to balance pressure on Moscow with efforts to maintain global stability and support Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
