Gary Walters dedicated 37 years to the White House, experiencing a life that remains hidden to most Americans. From his initial role as a junior officer responsible for presidential security to his exceptional tenure as the longest-serving chief usher in history, Walters was pivotal in overseeing key moments filled with emotion and significance. His latest book, “White House Memories 1970-2007,” unravels these experiences with profound honesty and warmth.
The role of the chief usher is highly demanding, if not glamorous. Walters managed operations that kept the White House efficient—from maintenance and renovations to overseeing a team of nearly 100 professionals, including butlers and cooks. His fundamental mission was to ensure that presidents and their families could focus on their roles without being troubled by household affairs. As he often expressed, “We served the presidency.”
His journey began by protecting Presidents Nixon and Ford, eventually moving to the Usher’s Office in 1976. In 1986, he ascended to chief usher, working under presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. Walters’ steadfast presence transcended political shifts and national festivities, showing his resolve to the institution rather than any individual. “Politics had nothing to do with it,” he maintains.
September 11, 2001, stands out as an unforgettable day. On that morning, staff were readying the South Lawn for the Congressional Picnic, having arranged over 160 tables. When news of the attacks reached them, most evacuated. However, Walters and a handful of colleagues remained, preparing for President Bush's expected return and clearing space for the emergency landing of Marine One.
Amid their efforts, they heard reports of explosions, including one at the Pentagon. Concern for their own safety grew when a fourth plane was reported toward the White House, but it was ultimately downed by courageous passengers in Pennsylvania. Walters later reflected on this harrowing experience as the most frightening of his White House tenure.
Yet, not all memories are steeped in danger; many highlight the warmth of humanity. Like the time Maureen Reagan, during her hospital visits, would bring teddy bears for children. When a shipment arrived late, Walters stashed those bears away. Years later, on Inauguration Day, he remembered them and placed one in each child’s bed, bringing joy to an otherwise solemn event.
Walters recalls a night during the Reagan era when he detected smoke from the Yellow Oval Room just minutes before an official dinner. A butler had inadvertently filled the room with smoke while attempting to create a cozy atmosphere. Acting swiftly, Walters and his team managed to clear the smoke while the Reagans remained blissfully unaware upstairs. This smooth handling ensured that the event continued seamlessly.
These narratives underline why Gary Walters holds a special place in the hearts of colleagues—he not only managed the President's residence but also became the custodian of its traditions and dignity. His long service exemplifies the often-unseen dedication essential for maintaining the integrity of American leadership.
Retiring in 2007, Walters now reflects on a remarkable era marked by presidents, celebrations, and crises that shaped the nation. His legacy is defined by loyalty, steady leadership, and a sense of accountability—traits that established him as one of the most reliable individuals in the White House. Through his reflections, readers are granted a rare, emotional insight into life within the country’s most iconic home—a narrative crafted by someone who experienced it all firsthand.
