Unmanned Vessel Strikes Russian Tanker Virat in Black Sea Incident

Post by : Raina Nasser

Istanbul, November 29, 2025 – An unmanned vessel has reportedly attacked the Russian tanker, Virat, operating within Russia's clandestine fleet, off Turkey's Black Sea coast. This incident occurred shortly after the vessel had been struck late Friday.

The Turkish Transport Ministry disclosed that the Virat sustained minimal damage to its starboard side, situated above the waterline. Thankfully, the crew is reported to be safe, with no injuries. The ministry indicated that the attack took place around 35 miles from the coast, although the perpetrator remains unidentified.

This recent occurrence contributes to the escalating tensions in the Black Sea, where unmanned vessels have increasingly targeted ships associated with Russia. Such incidents highlight the escalating threats to both commercial and military maritime operations in the region.

In a related event, Turkish authorities are actively responding to a fire on another tanker bound for Russia, the Kairos, which experienced an explosion earlier this week. Rescue teams successfully evacuated 25 crew members from the 274-meter vessel that was en route to Novorossiysk, Russia when the explosion occurred approximately 28 nautical miles offshore from Turkey. Efforts to extinguish the fire are ongoing, with the vessel under close observation.

Both the Virat and the Kairos are reportedly on a sanctions list against Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, generating increased international scrutiny regarding Russian maritime activities in the Black Sea.

The Black Sea has emerged as a focal point for maritime incidents amid persisting geopolitical strains. The recent attacks emphasize the vulnerability of Russian vessels under sanctions and the difficulties Turkish authorities face in upholding safety and security at sea.

The global community is attentively monitoring these developments, as further escalations could have significant repercussions on trade and navigation in the strategically crucial Black Sea area.
