Exploring Cutaneous Endometriosis: Insights from Dr. Kunal Sood

Post by : Saif Nasser

While endometriosis is predominantly associated with the uterus and pelvic organs, it can also appear in rare instances on the skin, a condition known as cutaneous endometriosis. This phenomenon presents a unique challenge for both healthcare providers and patients alike.

According to Dr. Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist and pain management expert, this rare type of endometriosis involves the growth of endometrial-like tissue beneath the skin. He explains, “Though infrequent, there are cases where such cells might develop on the abdominal skin, legs, or even other distant regions.”

One notable cause of this occurrence is post-surgical complications. Procedures such as C-sections or hysterectomies might unintentionally transfer endometrial cells to the incision areas during the healing process. However, Dr. Sood points out that cutaneous endometriosis can also arise without prior surgical intervention.

Recognizing Symptoms
Typically, cutaneous endometriosis manifests as a small, painful lump or nodule on the skin, with symptoms that may intensify during menstrual cycles. Accompanying signs might include redness, swelling, or slight bleeding, often leading patients to confuse them with infections or cysts.

Diagnosis and Management
Diagnosis usually entails physical assessments and imaging techniques such as ultrasounds. A biopsy might be required to definitively identify the condition. Treatment often centers around surgical removal of the tissue, alongside pain management options and hormonal therapies.

Highlighting the significance of awareness, Dr. Sood urges, “Understanding that endometriosis is not restricted to pelvic organs is crucial. Any unusual, painful skin lesion, particularly those changing with menstrual cycles, warrants a medical examination.”

In summary, although endometriosis primarily affects reproductive organs, its manifestation on the skin is possible. Recognizing this rare condition can facilitate early intervention, alleviating discomfort and averting potential complications.
