India's U-17 Women Gear Up for AFC Women's Cup in China

The Indian women's national under-17 football team has arrived in Suzhou, ready to take on the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 with both resolve and ambition. Under the leadership of head coach Pamela Conti, the Young Tigresses intend to enter the tournament with a fearless mentality, poised to compete against some of Asia's premier footballing nations and secure a spot in the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2026 in Morocco.

Kicking off their Group B match against Australia on May 2, India will subsequently face Japan on May 5 and Lebanon on May 8, with all matches taking place at the Suzhou Taihu Football Sports Centre.

This tournament holds significant importance for India, as the highest-performing teams will qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco later this year. For this squad, the competition stands as both a challenge against Asia’s elite and an opportunity to make history on the international stage.

In a spirited address before the team's departure, Coach Pamela Conti emphasized that India will not adopt a defensive approach, despite being labeled as underdogs against opponents like Japan and Australia. The primary goal is to engage directly with stronger teams and exhibit courage on the pitch.

According to Conti, the players are committed to putting forth their utmost effort for the nation, with a focus on attacking football rather than merely defending against stronger adversaries. The objective is for opposition teams to respect India's distinctive style of play and fighting spirit.

The Italian coach mentioned she is untroubled by the pressure surrounding the tournament, viewing the representation of the nation in a major event as a positive challenge. All players have their eyes set on continuous improvement and competing at the highest standards.

India’s training for the tournament has been intensive and extensive, having spent months in training camps predominantly in Bengaluru, in addition to competing in the SAFF U-19 Women’s Championship in Nepal earlier this year—where they excelled and emerged victorious. The team also engaged in international friendlies in Myanmar and Russia as preparation for the Asian Cup.

Conti lauded the dedication and discipline displayed by the young athletes during their training. Many players remained away from their families for nearly four months, continually focused on the tournament. The sacrifices made reflect their commitment and passion to uphold India's honor.

The team boasts several promising talents, including captain Julan Nongmaithem, who is already recognized as a standout prospect in Indian women’s football. At only 15 years old, Julan has debuted for the senior national team and now shoulders the responsibility of leading the U-17 squad through the continental competition.

Conti highlighted Julan's importance as a player with a bright future, stressing, however, that the team's success hinges on collective effort rather than individual brilliance. Teamwork, balance, and discipline are prioritized across all aspects of their game.

India will also rely on fierce attacking talents like Anushka Kumari and Pearl Fernandes, who have showcased their scoring abilities in youth competitions. Nevertheless, the coaching staff remains focused on the overall structure and cohesion of the team as paramount to their performance.

As anticipation builds, football fans across India will keenly follow the U-17 team's exploits in China. While previous Indian women’s teams have faced challenges progressing past the group stages in significant Asian tournaments, this U-17 squad is determined to alter that narrative with a bold and positive mindset.

With robust preparation, rising confidence, and a driven squad, India stands ready to navigate the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup, aiming for a historic berth in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
