Palestinian Foreign Minister Applauds UN Resolution as Initial Move Toward Gaza Peace

Post by : Raina Nasser

The United Nations Security Council has confirmed a resolution backing U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed initiative to resolve the ongoing Gaza conflict, a decision that Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin has termed a “crucial first step” towards achieving lasting peace.

Passed on Monday, the resolution advocates for the introduction of a multinational security force in Gaza, aimed at ensuring stability and averting further hostilities. It also calls on member states to engage in a newly formed Board of Peace, assigned to oversee the reconstruction and economic revival of Gaza, which has endured severe devastation from prolonged conflict.

Speaking from Ramallah, Shahin emphasized that despite this resolution indicating progress, it is merely the beginning of a much longer journey toward peace. “The resolution’s adoption is vital for the people of Gaza. It lays out a framework for security, governance, and rebuilding, but achieving these goals will demand commitment from both the international community and all stakeholders involved,” he highlighted.

Central to the resolution is the U.S.-drafted plan, which details a roadmap for demilitarizing conflict zones, distributing humanitarian assistance, and executing phased reconstruction initiatives. Furthermore, it proposes a governance framework to ensure civilian oversight in reconstruction efforts, with the aim of restoring critical infrastructure, healthcare, and education services throughout Gaza.

Diplomatic analysts caution that while the resolution has garnered widespread international backing, there are notable challenges in achieving compliance on the ground. It does not directly tackle the more profound political disputes between Israel and Palestinian authorities, leaving potential hurdles in its implementation. Nonetheless, advocates suggest that the involvement of a multinational security force and the Board of Peace establishes a structured system for monitoring compliance.

Shahin further reiterates the necessity of global collaboration. “The adoption by the Security Council is a step in the right direction, but genuine peace relies on all member states actively participating to ensure security, reconstruction, and economic recovery. This presents an opportunity for the global community to assist Gaza in emerging from devastation and establishing a sustainable future framework,” he remarked.

The resolution has elicited cautious optimism from humanitarian organizations, which have highlighted the profound effects of the conflict on Gaza’s civilian population. Decades of sporadic warfare have rendered the territory’s infrastructure severely impacted, resulting in high unemployment and widespread displacement. Experts assert that the coordinated international aid envisioned by the resolution is vital to prevent further humanitarian crises and stabilize the region.

With the Security Council's endorsement, the Trump-backed peace initiative now transitions into the implementation phase, requiring international stakeholders to collaborate closely with local authorities in Gaza, Israel, and neighboring countries to ensure that the plan results in tangible enhancements for civilians and fosters long-term regional stability.

The resolution’s adoption marks a diplomatic breakthrough in a conflict that has claimed numerous lives and displaced millions, further destabilizing the wider Middle East region. While significant challenges remain, the action taken by the Security Council provides a flicker of hope that a structured international intervention could finally pave the way for Gaza’s peace, security, and recovery.
