Rubbing your eyes might seem like a harmless action, but medical experts caution against it. Many individuals resort to this habit when experiencing itchiness, irritation, or dryness, seeking momentary relief. However, this relief is fraught with significant dangers. Recently, Dr. Sermed Mezher, a family medicine physician from England, shed light on the hazardous implications of eye rubbing and its potential long-term effects on vision.
Dr. Mezher highlighted a common misconception regarding the “pop” sound often heard during eye rubbing. He clarified that this noise typically indicates air moving into the tear duct, which isn't harmful. Nonetheless, the act of rubbing poses real threats. He emphasizes that eye rubbing should be avoided as it can alter the cornea's shape, the transparent front section of the eye.
Repeated rubbing can cause the cornea to bend and bulge. A healthy cornea maintains a smooth, rounded form, but excessive rubbing can lead to a condition known as keratoconus. This serious eye issue is irreversible and currently has no medicinal remedy; a corneal transplant—an extensive surgical procedure—is the only solution for restoring corneal shape.
To illustrate the impact of habitual eye rubbing, Dr. Mezher presented MRI scans demonstrating how eye pressure changes during this motion, which gradually degrades corneal integrity. Persistent rubbing over extended periods can culminate in irreversible damage, resulting in symptoms such as blurry vision and heightened light sensitivity, complicating the use of corrective lenses.
Dr. Mezher recommends addressing the root causes of eye discomfort rather than resorting to rubbing. He clarified that experiencing itchy eyes is not typical and often points toward underlying issues, like allergies to dust, pollen, perfumes, or prolonged screen exposure. Also, old or improperly fitted contact lenses can exacerbate irritation.
Instead of rubbing, Dr. Mezher advised identifying the underlying cause. Allergy drops may be beneficial for allergy-related irritation, while frequent breaks from screens can alleviate dryness. Avoidance of smoke or strong scents is also advisable. Understanding and addressing the triggers of discomfort can effectively safeguard your eyes and reduce the urge to rub.
Medical professionals suggest alternative remedies such as splashing your eyes with clean water, using artificial tears, or gently pressing on the eyelids without rubbing. Maintaining hand hygiene and steering clear of touching the face can further lessen irritation.
Dr. Mezher's primary message is clear: our eyes are fragile organs, and the act of rubbing can lead to lasting, irreparable damage. Monitoring any eye irritation and acting promptly is the best strategy for preserving ocular health.
