UAE's Vital Medical Airlift Supports DRC Ebola Fight

Post by : Raina Nasser

In response to a new strain of the Ebola virus affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Dubai Humanitarian has initiated an emergency airlift of crucial medical supplies. This initiative aligns with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and is being executed in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO).

The airlift consists of 20 metric tonnes of vital medical supplies sourced from WHO's emergency stockpile situated in Dubai. The aircraft departed from Al Maktoum International Airport, making its way to Uganda before reaching eastern Congo, where local health authorities are diligently working to curb the outbreak.

The incoming supplies are poised to assist hundreds of patients in the coming month and bolster approximately 280 healthcare facilities in regions significantly impacted by the outbreak. Among the items included are multipurpose tents, disinfectants, personal protective equipment (PPE), and thermometers—key materials for disease detection, treatment, and infection control.

Giuseppe Saba, CEO of Dubai Humanitarian, emphasized the organization's commitment to swift responses to global health challenges. He stated that the rapid deployment of these essential supplies is vital as Ebola cases escalate. Furthermore, he mentioned Dubai Humanitarian’s readiness to sustain support for relief operations through its Global Humanitarian Impact Fund, aided by the Dubai Royal Air Wing.

Saba also pointed out the increasing difficulties humanitarian organizations face, such as supply chain disruptions and limited funding resources. Despite these challenges, Dubai Humanitarian continues to collaborate closely with international partners and the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) to ensure that essential medical supplies reach those in need.

Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, commended the UAE and Dubai Humanitarian for their ongoing commitment to global health emergency responses. She highlighted the importance of swift action and international collaboration in the current climate, especially amidst the declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Dr. Balkhy stated that this airlift showcases the critical nature of robust partnerships in dealing with public health crises. She outlined that the incoming supplies will enable frontline healthcare workers to effectively identify, manage, and respond to Ebola cases while ensuring their safety as they tend to patients and communities in need.

Historically, Dubai Humanitarian has been instrumental in global health initiatives. During the West Africa Ebola outbreak between 2014 and 2016, they functioned as a pivotal global logistics hub, facilitating the delivery of medical aid and resources to the countries most severely affected by the crisis.

This recent Ebola response underlines Dubai's steadfast dedication to advancing global humanitarian efforts, particularly in regions grappling with immediate health challenges. As the DRC strives to manage the outbreak, the timely arrival of these medical supplies is expected to enhance healthcare operations and aid in the battle against this dangerous virus.
