UAE Enhances Its Influence in Antarctic Affairs at ATCM48 in Japan

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The Emirates Polar Program marked its second attendance at the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM48) and the 28th gathering of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP28), taking place in Hiroshima, Japan, from May 11th to 21st, 2026. This involvement underscores the UAE’s expanding influence in Antarctic governance and scientific research.

Representing the UAE as a non-consultative member, the delegation engaged in plenary discussions and contributed to the Environmental Protection committee through Chief Science Advisor Dr. Aisha Al Suwaidi. Their active participation emphasizes the nation’s ongoing dedication to fostering international scientific dialogue under the Antarctic Treaty System.

At the meetings, the UAE, in collaboration with Bulgaria, presented a working paper regarding the establishment of a new sub-base unit. This endeavor, spearheaded by the National Center of Meteorology within the Emirates Polar Program, exemplifies tangible international cooperation in Antarctic research and infrastructure development.

The Antarctic Treaty System is designed to facilitate peaceful scientific collaboration and preserve the Antarctic environment. The UAE’s involvement highlights its commitment to science diplomacy and sustainable environmental practices.

Through its engagement at ATCM48, the Emirates Polar Program prepares the UAE for broader participation in upcoming meetings, such as ATCM49, thereby enhancing its long-term scientific and environmental contributions in the region.
