UAE Uncovers Arms Smuggling Operation to Port Sudan, Accused Face Justice

Post by : Raina Nasser

UAE authorities have wrapped up a significant probe into a clandestine operation involving illegal military equipment transfers to the Port Sudan Authority via UAE grounds. The arrested members of the network are now set to be brought to trial.

The inquiry was initiated after the apprehension of the suspects on April 30. Officials disclosed that the group was implicated in illegal arms trafficking and money laundering activities. Their modus operandi involved discreet brokerage, mediation, and securing undisclosed profits through obscure channels.

Further investigations revealed the accused engaged with Sudanese military officials, including high-ranking officers, politicians, and business leaders. Additionally, links to individuals and firms that appear on US sanctions lists and Interpol's watchlist were exposed during the investigation.

The transactions were reported to be conducted at the behest of the Sudanese Armed Forces’ Armament Committee, led by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and his deputy Yasser Al-Atta. Coordination was reportedly managed by Othman Al-Zubair, the financial officer associated with the Port Sudan Authority.

Authorities highlighted that the investigation unveiled essential information concerning the financial origins of the military equipment dealings. A wealth of evidence was gathered, including audio and video recordings, communications among the members, contracts, financial documents, and comprehensive statements detailing the dealings and fund transfers. Reports from a technical committee suggested that a portion of the funding passed through a UAE-based bank.

The State Security Prosecution acknowledged that the suspects would be prosecuted in accordance with the UAE's dedication to justice, transparency, and national security. Officials reiterated that the quick detection and thorough inquiry into this case demonstrate the UAE’s alertness in combating illegal arms trade and financial crimes.

This incident reaffirms the UAE’s stringent stance against unlawful military transactions, money laundering, and actions posing threats to regional stability, clearly illustrating the nation's resolve to uphold law and order.
