The United Arab Emirates has officially unveiled the Abu Dhabi AI Ecosystem for Global Agricultural Development, a transformative platform designed to assist farmers in areas facing climate challenges and severe weather conditions. This initiative, part of the UAE–Gates Foundation collaboration initially revealed at COP28, involves a $200 million investment aimed at propelling agricultural innovation. The launch was graced by Mariam Almheiri, Head of the International Affairs Office at the UAE Presidential Court, alongside Bill Gates, Chair of the Gates Foundation. This platform synergizes research, AI know-how, and technology from Abu Dhabi to support communities grappling with changing weather patterns.
The ecosystem is anchored in four pivotal initiatives: the CGIAR AI Hub, the Institute for Agriculture and Artificial Intelligence (IAAI), AgriLLM, and AIM for Scale. Hosted in Abu Dhabi, the CGIAR AI Hub will harness over 50 years of agricultural data and research to create digital tools and solutions for farmers worldwide. Meanwhile, IAAI offers advisory services, training programs, and technical support to governments, NGOs, and partner organizations, aiming to enhance food security and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.
AgriLLM represents an open-source AI model that provides agricultural insights and guidance in various languages. It draws upon extensive datasets, research documents, and real-world farming inquiries to offer practical advice on climate adaptation, resource management, and sustainable agricultural practices. This model will be readily available to farmers, researchers, and organizations for use, modification, and enhancement.
AIM for Scale, based at NYU Abu Dhabi, is dedicated to AI-enabled weather forecasting and digital advisory services. This initiative has already connected with millions of farmers in India, providing AI-based monsoon forecasts, with aspirations to extend its services to over 100 million farmers worldwide by 2030. The objective is to ensure that cutting-edge research and sophisticated AI solutions are translated into practical instruments that directly support farmers facing erratic climate conditions.
Mariam Almheiri emphasized the UAE's commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence to deliver tangible solutions for farmers across the globe. Bill Gates noted that this initiative strengthens food security and empowers smallholder farmers. The collaboration includes significant partners like MBZUAI, NYU Abu Dhabi, ai71, CGIAR, and the World Bank, fostering a cohesive system to apply AI in agriculture. This platform signifies a significant advancement in utilizing technology and innovation to secure a sustainable agricultural future.
