UAE’s Airstrikes in Iran: A New Chapter in Regional Tensions

UAE’s Airstrikes in Iran: A New Chapter in Regional Tensions

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Recent reports indicate that the United Arab Emirates has executed a series of airstrikes within Iran, marking a pivotal escalation in the region's conflict dynamics. The Wall Street Journal highlighted these developments as a more pronounced direct engagement by the UAE in efforts that might redefine its role in Gulf security.

The Emirati military operations reportedly targeted essential sites including a refinery in Lavan Island and various strategic locations on Qeshm and Abu Musa islands, as well as the key port city of Bandar Abbas and the petrochemical hub in Asaluyeh.

The strike on Asaluyeh garnered significant international attention, given its crucial role in Iran’s energy production. This led to U.S. interventions aiming to prevent further Iranian strikes against energy facilities throughout the region.

Sources from the report reveal that the UAE coordinated closely with the U.S. and Israel in these military actions as part of a sustained campaign against Iran, which persisted in the weeks following a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, reflecting the complex layers of this escalating conflict.

Such military moves represent a notable shift from the historically cautious stance of Gulf nations amidst rising tensions. Previously, several Gulf states, including the UAE, publicly declared their airspace would not support military actions against Iran, given the risks of retaliation.

The publication also notes rifts among Gulf allies during the conflict. Reports suggest that UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed frustration towards Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for not participating in the anti-Iran efforts early on.

Saudi Arabia, in turn, communicated its concerns to the U.S., emphasizing that these Emirati strikes could invite retaliation from Iran, potentially targeting sensitive infrastructures such as oil installations and transport hubs.

Impact of Conflict on the UAE

The conflict has reportedly exacted a heavy toll on the UAE, following Iran's large-scale missile and drone campaign. Over 2,800 missiles were launched, impacting the UAE, a proximity-sensitive ally of the U.S., home to critical military bases.

Despite advanced U.S. air defense systems being in place, some missile attacks caused casualties and damage to infrastructure, resulting in at least 13 fatalities, including Emirati servicemen and expatriate workers.

Prominent locations were affected, including Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 3 experiencing damage from a missile strike, leading to evacuations. Fires broke out at Jebel Ali Port, with debris from intercepted missiles falling within the premises. Additionally, two major oil tanks at Fujairah Petroleum Hub were ablaze for days, impacting fuel operations.

Economic Repercussions

The conflict has precipitated a substantial economic strain on the UAE, with estimates suggesting a loss of nearly $120 billion in market value from Dubai and Abu Dhabi stock exchanges amid increasing uncertainties.

Aviation disturbances emerged from frequent missile alerts, causing substantial revenue losses, with industry analysts estimating each minute of halted runway activity to result in losses nearing $1 million.

Concerns regarding regional stability have led to a downturn in the real estate sector, as property transactions dropped, and housing prices in parts of the UAE occasionally fell by as much as 15% due to investor caution.

The ongoing conflict near the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted shipping activities, raising alarms over energy supply chains in the area.

The UNDP has projected that the general conflict in the region could diminish the UAE's GDP by as much as five percent—a substantial setback for a nation striving to uphold its reputation as a stable financial hub.

While the details from The Wall Street Journal have stirred attention, they notably accentuate the serious consequences the conflict has for security dynamics and elevate fears of a broader confrontation across the Gulf.
