At the 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships held in Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates showcased an exceptional performance, securing gold medals in both the men's and women's 400-meter finals. This achievement further establishes the UAE as a rising contender in Asian athletics.
With these latest victories, the UAE has garnered a total of three medals so far in the championship, which runs until June 1. Earlier in the event, Salma Haitham Al Marri had already contributed to the medal tally by winning a bronze in the women's hammer throw.
The highlight of the championships was Sulaiman Abdulrahman's standout performance in the men's 400-meter final, where he broke the championship record with a remarkable time of 44.85 seconds. This astonishing feat not only secured him the gold medal, but also marked a personal best while rewriting the history books.
Abdulrahman made history as the first athlete in the Asian U20 Championships to finish the men's 400 meters in under 45 seconds. His winning time eclipsed the previous record of 45.53 seconds, which had been set by China's Aiyilikesi'er Wumai'er in 2024.
The UAE's second gold came from Aminat Qamar Al-Din, who dazzled in the women's 400-meter final, crossing the line in 52.72 seconds and achieving a new personal best. Her success further underscored the rising talent within the UAE athletics framework on the continent.
The UAE Athletics Federation has hailed Abdulrahman's record-breaking run as one of the most significant accomplishments of the championships. His notable performance not only earned him a gold medal but also enshrined his name in the annals of Asian junior athletics.
Major General Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Mur, President of the UAE Athletics Federation, commended the athletes on their tremendous success, stating that the two gold medals reflect the nation's ongoing commitment to sports development and athlete preparation.
He emphasized that these results highlight the continuous support from the UAE leadership towards the sporting sector, aided by the National Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sports in nurturing future elite athletes.
According to Al Mur, the triumph in Hong Kong signals the effectiveness of the federation's long-term strategy to cultivate young talents and develop champions capable of succeeding globally in athletics.
With more events still on the agenda before the conclusion of the championship, the UAE team aims to build on this remarkable achievement and enhance their medal tally, showcasing the UAE's growing prominence in Asian athletics.
