In a significant achievement for its growing space program, China celebrated the safe return of three astronauts who completed nearly seven months aboard the Tiangong space station. The landing of the Shenzhou-21 crew signifies the longest uninterrupted mission carried out by Chinese astronauts, underscoring the nation's ambitions in human space exploration.
The return capsule, carrying Zhang Lu, Wu Fei, and Zhang Hongzhang, touched down at the Dongfeng landing site in Inner Mongolia on May 29, 2026. Recovery teams swiftly approached the capsule to assist the crew following their record-setting mission in orbit. This mission is considered a key stride toward China's objective of landing astronauts on the Moon before 2030.
During their lengthy stay on the Tiangong space station, the astronauts engaged in various scientific experiments, conducted technology demonstrations, and performed equipment maintenance tasks. They also ensured the transfer of crucial research data and supplies while preparing the station for the upcoming arrival of another astronaut team.
A highlight of the mission was the execution of three successful spacewalks. Veteran astronaut Zhang Lu achieved a milestone by completing his seventh career spacewalk, a record among Chinese astronauts, showcasing China's evolving capabilities in conducting sophisticated tasks outside its space station.
After returning, Zhang Lu expressed heartfelt thanks to his family, teammates, and the numerous engineers and scientists behind the mission. Fellow astronaut Zhang Hongzhang shared the profound experience of seeing Earth from space, interpreting humanity as a cohesive community that transcends borders.
The mission paved the way for a smooth crew transition. Before their departure, the Shenzhou-21 astronauts exchanged insights and operational knowledge with the incoming Shenzhou-23 crew. Among the new astronauts is Lai Ka-ying, marking Hong Kong's first representation in a Chinese space mission, further underscoring significant developments in the national space endeavors.
China's aspirations in space are rapidly evolving, highlighted by ambitious projects in lunar exploration, advanced scientific studies, and extended human missions. With the successful operation of the Tiangong space station and initiatives gearing up for a Moon landing, the country is positioning itself as a formidable player in the global space arena for the future.
