Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes Taiwan, Over 8,300 Residents Evacuated Amid Severe Flooding

Taiwan faces a significant weather event as Typhoon Fung-wong hit the island on Wednesday, unleashing torrential rains and severe flooding in the eastern regions. Authorities evacuated upwards of 8,300 individuals to safer areas, particularly in Yilan and Hualien, where floodwaters peaked at neck-high levels.

The typhoon has weakened after passing through the Philippines, where it resulted in 27 fatalities, yet it caused considerable disruption. Numerous businesses and educational institutions closed in various southern locales, with a reported 51 injuries.

Photographs from the impact zones, specifically the rural area of Yilan, depict inundated streets and submerged residences. In Suao, fisherman Hung Chun-yi recounted the swift rise of water, stating that flood levels reached 60 cm inside his home. “The rainfall was unprecedented; it overwhelmed the drainage systems,” he remarked.

Local firefighting teams orchestrated evacuation strategies, concentrating on areas severely affected by the dual impact of monsoon rains and the humidity from the typhoon. Dongshan town in Yilan received an astonishing 794 mm of rain on just Tuesday, emphasizing the extreme weather conditions.

While the devastation unfolded in eastern Taiwan, northern locations like Hsinchu, notable for its tech sector and home to TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, remained largely spared by Fung-wong.

Meteorologists forecast that Fung-wong will advance towards Taiwan's southern tip before moving into the Pacific Ocean, gradually diminishing in power. This event follows a previous typhoon in September that caused fatalities in Hualien, highlighting the region's susceptibility to late-season tropical disturbances.

Local officials continue to advise those in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety measures as cleanup and rescue efforts proceed in the most severely impacted regions.
