On May 12 and 13, 2026, media professionals from various Turkmen regions convened in Ashgabat to participate in a specialized training program dedicated to media literacy. Hosted by the OSCE Centre, the initiative aimed to bolster competencies in critical thinking, digital security, fact-checking, and ethical journalism in today’s fast-evolving media climate.
The gathering included representatives from regional newspapers, television broadcasters, and digital media outlets. The training addressed urgent challenges posed by artificial intelligence, misinformation, and harmful content proliferating on digital platforms globally.
According to the organizers, with the rapid advancements in technology reshaping modern journalism, media literacy is becoming crucial. Participants were instructed on how to discern false information, critically assess digital content, and produce responsible, trustworthy journalism for the public good.
In his opening remarks, William Leaf, the OSCE Centre’s Head, highlighted the pivotal role of journalists. He underscored the pressing responsibility they hold in offering reliable information to help the public navigate through misinformation and manipulation.
The training sessions were led by national experts along with insights from Adil Jalilov, an international media specialist from Kazakhstan’s MediaNet International Center for Journalism. The curriculum included lessons on fact-checking, media ethics, digital safety protocols, as well as integrating neural networks and AI in content creation.
Moreover, the program focused on UNESCO’s ethical guidelines and best practices for responsible reporting. Participants were equipped with contemporary strategies for verifying online information and safeguarding against cyber threats and disinformation that can undermine media integrity.
Organizers noted that the OSCE Centre’s efforts align with Turkmenistan’s National Human Rights Action Plan by promoting media freedom and literacy initiatives. A cohort of 20 national trainers has been established to further educate journalists, students, bloggers, and public officials nationwide.
According to officials, these training programs are strategically essential for the future of journalism in Turkmenistan. The initiative is poised to equip emerging journalists and media practitioners with the skills needed to uphold the integrity of the information landscape and adeptly tackle global digital challenges.
