The delegation from Turkmenistan is actively participating in the 79th World Health Assembly taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 18 to May 23, 2026. Led by Azat Ovezov, the Deputy Minister of Health and Medical Industry, the team is engaging in key discussions.
This annual assembly gathers representatives from the World Health Organization's member states to tackle pressing global health issues, enhance international partnerships, and fortify national public health systems.
During this pivotal visit, Azat Ovezov met with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, where both affirmed the robust partnership between Turkmenistan and WHO, while exploring future healthcare priorities.
The Turkmen representatives underscored the achievements of various joint health programs conducted alongside UN agencies and reiterated their dedication to advancing long-term collaboration with WHO regarding public health and medical advancements.
Furthermore, Turkmenistan has extended a formal invitation to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to visit in October 2026, coinciding with significant regional health events planned during the Year of Health initiatives.
In addition, the Turkmen officials participated in an informal round-table at WHO headquarters with health ministers and leaders from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, including WHO Europe Regional Director Dr. Hans Kluge.
Discussions centered on the finalization of the Roadmap for Health and Well-being in Central Asia 2026–2030 (RMCA 2.0), aimed at enhancing regional healthcare collaboration and strategic partnerships among Central Asian nations.
Officials also assessed the plans for the official launch of the roadmap and its integration with wider regional health programs linked to the CIS Year of Health framework.
In a separate bilateral dialogue with Dr. Hans Kluge, the Turkmen delegation explored opportunities for augmenting public health systems across Central Asia through deeper regional cooperation.
