In a significant strategic move, Turkish Airlines has executed a deal to acquire a substantial minority stake in Spain's Air Europa, focusing on enhancing its global influence, especially in Latin America. This agreement involves a €300 million investment in convertible debt, translating into a 25–27% ownership stake, while the Spanish airline retains majority ownership.
The deal values Air Europa, Spain’s third-largest airline trailing Iberia and Vueling, at around €1.2 billion. The founding Hidalgo family will continue to hold a majority stake, despite some shares being transferred to the British-Spanish aviation group IAG, which operates airlines like British Airways and Iberia, securing their stake at 20%.
This agreement, initially reached in August, follows the early repayment by Air Europa of a nearly €500 million state-backed loan from SEPI, Spain’s state aid fund. Turkish Airlines was selected as the primary investor after competitively outbidding contenders like Lufthansa and Air France.
Operating from Istanbul, Turkish Airlines covers more than 350 destinations across 131 countries, ranking as the largest airline globally in terms of network reach. In 2024, its revenue surpassed €19 billion, reflecting a robust financial standing.
This investment significantly boosts Turkish Airlines’ presence in Latin America, a crucial growth area. Air Europa manages 20 long-haul flights from Madrid to key destinations including Buenos Aires, Caracas, and Asuncion. In 2023, Air Europa captured 22.1% of the Spain-Latin America air travel market, providing a direct opportunity for Turkish Airlines to expand its services in the region.
Analysts note that this acquisition fortifies Turkish Airlines' global strategy, enabling the airline to diversify its revenue sources, penetrate lucrative long-haul markets, and utilize Air Europa’s established networks. This move also strategically positions Turkish Airlines as a significant competitor against European airlines striving for dominance on transatlantic routes.
Through this acquisition, Turkish Airlines intends to leverage the increasing tourism and business travel between Europe and Latin America, further solidifying its stature as a leading international airline with a diversified portfolio.
