US President Donald Trump has come forth to defend Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, dismissing US intelligence reports that allege his involvement in the 2018 assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. During a recent press interaction, Trump emphasized the contentious nature of Khashoggi while underlining the pivotal economic ties between Saudi Arabia and the United States.
Trump raised questions about the ability to ascertain the crown prince’s connection to the incident, stating, "Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it." He added that inquiries regarding the crown prince's role were unnecessary and indicated his strong public support for the Saudi leader.
Since Khashoggi’s murder in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Trump has frequently favored the crown prince's claims of innocence, often prioritizing Riyadh’s assertions over US intelligence conclusions. He characterized Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post, as "somebody that was extremely controversial" and remarked that many people “didn’t like” him, thereby minimizing the journalist's impact.
The president has repeatedly highlighted the strategic and financial significance of the US-Saudi relationship, citing job creation, defense contracts, and trade advantages as justifications for a robust alliance with Riyadh. He previously noted his desire to avoid disrupting the substantial investments from Saudi Arabia into the US economy, framing the kingdom as a key partner in job and business creation.
In 2018, Trump mentioned having communicated with the crown prince, who had "totally denied any knowledge" of the events surrounding Khashoggi's death. Although Trump acknowledged the possibility that associates of Mohammed bin Salman might have been involved, he expressed uncertainty about definitively knowing the crown prince's role.
Despite intelligence assessments suggesting the crown prince’s possible involvement, Trump reiterated the necessity of maintaining robust US-Saudi relations, calling the situation a "terrible tragedy." He stressed the fact that the kingdom denied any responsibility for the murder, noting that the CIA had not officially confirmed the crown prince's direct involvement, thus leaving some ambiguity in his public remarks.
Trump's defense of the crown prince has sparked backlash, particularly from those advocating for accountability in Khashoggi's assassination. He continues to prioritize the economic partnership between the US and Saudi Arabia, often framing the incident as a tragic event rather than a personal indictment of the crown prince.
