The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has reiterated his assertion that he intervened to halt a potential conflict between India and Pakistan earlier this year. During a prominent international forum in the US, Trump outlined how he threatened both nations with significant trade tariffs to encourage de-escalation.
This claim has been made by Trump over 60 times recently, despite India consistently arguing that no third-party involvement occurred, and that any agreements were achieved through direct military communications between the two nations.
Details of the Claim
Trump voiced these comments at the US-Saudi Investment Forum, where influential leaders and business figures were present. He emphasized his belief that economic measures and trade pressure are more effective tools than military action in resolving global conflicts.
Trump's Account of Events
According to Trump, tensions between India and Pakistan escalated in May to a point where both countries were on the brink of potential military action, including nuclear threats. He claims to have intervened by stating:
The US would impose a 350% tariff on products from India and Pakistan
Trade between the US and both countries could be suspended
The US would not permit millions to perish in a nuclear conflict that could impact American cities
He mentioned preparing the Treasury Secretary for the tariff order and informing the leaders of both nations they could reach out if they wanted to de-escalate.
Reportedly, both leaders responded swiftly, asking that these tariffs not be enacted. Trump noted that:
The Prime Minister of Pakistan expressed gratitude for averting war
India's Prime Minister Modi stated that India was “not going to go to war”
He recounted advising Modi, “Let’s work out a deal,” calling this a significant diplomatic achievement during his presidency.
Context of Events
These tensions surfaced following a devastating attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. In retaliation, on May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor aimed at terror installations across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
This heightened military readiness on both sides. However, a mere three days later, on May 10, India and Pakistan agreed to cease offensive operations following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs).
Indian Rejection of Trump's Narrative
Indian officials have consistently refuted Trump’s version of events. New Delhi has firmly reiterated:
No third-party mediation, including the US, was involved
The ceasefire was achieved through direct military communication
India does not accept external mediation for bilateral security issues
This stance has remained unchanged through various administrations.
Why Trump's Claims Are Relevant
Trump's narrative continues to spark discussions due to:
The ongoing nuclear threat posed by India and Pakistan
The sensitive nature of third-party involvement claims during military negotiations
Global interest in US-India diplomatic relations
With Trump resurfacing in political dialogue, these comments are entering wider discussions on foreign policy.
Trump asserts he prevented a potential India-Pakistan military conflict through tariff threats and personal diplomacy, a narrative India strongly contests, insisting that the resolution was reached through direct military engagement.
The divergent accounts have sparked renewed interest as both regional security dynamics and global diplomatic relations evolve.
