In a bold statement on Friday, former President Donald Trump demanded an investigation by the Department of Justice into foreign-owned meat processors, accusing them of contributing to the unprecedented spike in beef prices across the U.S. This demand comes as public concern rises regarding living costs and following a series of electoral challenges for the Republican Party.
Trump specifically highlighted key meat producers, alleging that collusion and price manipulation are the driving forces behind these escalating costs. “We will always protect our American ranchers,” he emphasized, noting that many leading meatpacking firms have significant foreign ownership, which he claims threatens both the affordability of food and the integrity of the national supply chain.
The surge in beef prices is attributed to various factors, including adverse weather conditions, prolonged periods of low prices, and a significant reduction in the U.S. cattle population, which is now the smallest it has been in decades. Moreover, Trump’s tariffs on Brazil, a primary supplier of beef, have restricted imports even as domestic demand remains high, leading consumers to hesitate in opting for chicken or pork despite rising expenditures.
The U.S. beef industry is notably concentrated, with four main companies dominating much of the market. Among these, Brazil-based JBS stands out as the leading beef producer in the country, also engaged in producing considerable quantities of poultry and pork. This company has previously been under legal scrutiny for price-fixing practices; in 2022, it settled a $52.5 million lawsuit alongside Tyson Foods and others, addressing alleged price manipulation without admitting any wrongdoing.
Senators Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma, Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, and Tim Sheehy of Montana congregated with Trump to analyze the fluctuations in beef prices. Mullin remarked that the White House was inclined to enlist the Justice Department in this exploration, drawing comparisons to similar antitrust issues that meatpackers faced in 2019.
Trump’s remarks also follow his previous suggestion to import beef from Argentina as a potential strategy to reduce domestic prices, a proposal that met with backlash from American cattle ranchers. Growing food costs have emerged as a major concern across party lines, with previous administrations stressing the necessity to bolster competition and inhibit price gouging within the meat sector.
