A new phenomenon is sweeping through men’s fashion, dubbed the “performative male” trend. With over 20 million views associated with the hashtag #performativemale, it is reshaping how young men choose to dress and express themselves.
The typical “performative male” is characterized by oversized pastel hoodies, relaxed trousers or skirts, and chic tote bags embellished with playful charms like Labubu dolls. Often seen sipping matcha or engrossed in a book, this individual exudes confidence and style, unafraid to embrace a softer aesthetic. His wardrobe fuses comfort with creativity, aligning with modern ideals of attractiveness.
In the past, men's wardrobes consisted largely of basic shirts, jeans, and workwear. However, this mindset is rapidly evolving. Today's young men prioritize fashion as a means to showcase their personalities, emotions, and moods, breaking away from traditional notions of masculinity in favor of a more expressive, softer style.
Fashion designer Prasoon Sharma of Triune notes this shift reflects a newfound freedom. “Men are embracing fashion for self-expression,” he states. “They are exploring vibrant colors, accessories, and fabrics previously deemed unmasculine. From pastels to pearls, tote bags to cropped jackets, it’s about owning your style, not concealing it.”
This trend resonates with the larger narrative of “performing masculinity.” Previously, masculinity was synonymous with toughness and simplicity; today, men utilize fashion to narrate their stories and showcase their appreciation for art, culture, and self-image. Every outfit transforms into a performance woven into their identity.
Men embracing the performative male aesthetic don’t just wear clothes; they present them. Careful selfies and effortless poses reveal meticulous planning. The aim goes beyond appearance, aspiring to convey a deep understanding of fashion and emotional nuance.
Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have catalyzed this movement, making fashion more visual and personal. Young men share “fit checks,” daily outfit showcases, and humorous mirror selfies, with their audiences celebrating creativity and confidence over traditional masculinity.
The Labubu doll, a popular collectible often attached to bags, symbolizes this trend, blending playfulness with confidence. Carrying a Labubu charm, enjoying a matcha drink, or sporting an art-print tote sends a powerful message: it’s perfectly acceptable for men to infuse fun into their style.
Experts suggest this transition signals broader social changes. Men today are increasingly candid about their feelings, mental health, and self-image. Fashion serves as a vehicle for this transformation. “What was once considered feminine is simply fashion now,” Sharma explains. “It transcends gender and emphasizes personality.”
However, some critics express concern that the term “performative” implies an element of pretense, suggesting many young men are more concerned with online appeal than authentic self-representation. Conversely, others see this as a laudable evolution, demonstrating that men can be both stylish and sensitive.
The reality likely occupies a middle ground. The performative male aesthetic occupies a unique intersection of fashion, identity, and social media, encouraging exploration of the self while inviting public sharing.
Every item, be it a meticulously selected tote, a pearl necklace, or a pastel hoodie, conveys a story. This narrative is clear: contemporary men are no longer intimidated by visibility.
As this trend continues to flourish, it's evident that fashion has transcended mere clothing. It now embodies how men feel about their appearance and how those feelings link them to the broader world.
