In a tragic turn of events, a pilot lost their life when a small aircraft crashed close to Tramore in County Waterford, Ireland, on Thursday at approximately 12:50 PM local time. The flight was being operated solo at the time of the mishap, as confirmed by local authorities.
Emergency personnel, including Coast Guard Rescue 117, swiftly responded to the crash site as the aircraft descended while attempting to approach Waterford Airport. The deceased pilot was subsequently transferred to University Hospital Waterford.
The aircraft involved, a privately-owned Vulcanair P68C, was en route from Sligo to Beziers, France. Reports suggest that the plane turned back off Ireland's southern coast and was heading towards Waterford when the crash took place.
An initial assessment of the crash site was performed by the Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) on Thursday. A team of four inspectors is scheduled to revisit the site on Friday for further investigation.
Authorities are investigating the precise cause of the mishap. They confirmed that no additional passengers were aboard, and safety protocols are under review as part of the ongoing inquiry.
