A deadly tornado struck the southern Brazilian town of Rio Bonito do Iguacu on Friday evening, resulting in the loss of at least six lives and injuring more than 700 individuals. This sudden tempest, which lasted just minutes, left a trail of destruction, obliterating homes, schools, and businesses.
Local officials reported that winds reached speeds up to 250 km/h, affecting nearly 90 percent of the town. Entire areas were devastated as roofs were torn off, vehicles overturned, and debris strewn across the streets. Aerial views further illustrated the extensive damage—what was once a vibrant town now resembles a war-torn landscape.
“It took everything—our homes, schools, and shops,” lamented local resident Roselei Dalcandon as she surveyed the ruins of her former business. “What’s next for us?” she reflected, resonating with the collective anguish felt by the community.
Authorities confirmed that one person remains unaccounted for as search and rescue teams comb through the debris for any remaining survivors. Emergency shelters have been set up in surrounding areas to house displaced residents.
Fernando Schunig, head of Parana’s Civil Defense, likened the devastation to a “war zone” and cautioned that more casualties could arise as recovery efforts progress. “Storms hitting populated areas inflict severe and often deadly damage,” he stated.
The tornado also instigated severe weather incidents in adjacent regions, yielding strong winds, hailstorms, and flash floods within Parana, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. Fresh alerts for hazardous weather conditions have been issued.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has dispatched ministers and disaster management specialists to oversee emergency relief and assess the situation.
Southern Brazil has experienced a series of extreme weather events in recent years. Last year alone, catastrophic floods in Rio Grande do Sul resulted in over 200 deaths and the displacement of millions, with climate experts linking the escalating incidents to global warming.
As rescue operations unfold, Brazil mourns yet another natural calamity, highlighting the increasing vulnerability of communities in the face of climate change.
