The death of Dr. Adnan al-Bursh, one of Gaza's most respected and skilled orthopedic surgeons, has cast a deep shadow over the already suffering Palestinian territory. More than just a doctor, Dr. al-Bursh was a humanitarian, teacher, and symbol of resilience. His sudden and tragic death in Israeli detention has shaken Gaza’s medical community and left a hole that may never be filled.
In a region where healthcare has long been under pressure due to ongoing conflict and blockade, the loss of a doctor of his caliber is not just a personal tragedy but a national one. This editorial examines the circumstances surrounding Dr. al-Bursh’s death, the impact on Gaza's fragile healthcare system, and the calls for justice and accountability from his peers and international observers.
Who Was Dr. Adnan al-Bursh?
Dr. Adnan al-Bursh was no ordinary doctor. With over two decades of experience in orthopedic surgery, he worked at Gaza’s largest hospital, al-Shifa Medical Complex. He had also served as head of orthopedics at the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza. Known for his steady hands and compassionate heart, Dr. al-Bursh was beloved by patients, colleagues, and students alike.
He was particularly active during times of war, often performing surgeries under intense pressure and with limited medical supplies. Colleagues recall him staying at the hospital for days on end, sleeping on benches, and refusing to leave until every patient received care. He was a mentor to young doctors and helped shape the future of medical practice in Gaza.
The Circumstances of His Death
Dr. al-Bursh was reportedly arrested by Israeli forces in December 2023 while working at al-Shifa Hospital. Israeli officials have not provided a clear reason for his detention, and his family and colleagues say he was never formally charged or allowed access to legal counsel.
In April 2024, news surfaced from the Palestinian Prisoners Society and the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs that Dr. al-Bursh had died while held at Ofer Prison, a major Israeli detention facility near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. His body has not been returned to his family, and no autopsy or cause of death has been disclosed.
Rights groups have raised serious concerns about the conditions of his detention, noting that many Palestinian prisoners are held without trial or medical care.
Reactions From Gaza and Beyond
The response from Gaza’s medical community has been one of shock, anger, and sorrow.
"We did not just lose a doctor," said Dr. Hani al-Jaafarawi, director of the Medical Rehabilitation Centre in Gaza. "We lost a leader, a role model, and a symbol of what it means to serve humanity."
His colleagues remember him as a person who lived for others. Even during bombings, he chose to stay and operate on patients rather than seek safety.
International human rights organizations have also expressed concern. Doctors Without Borders, the International Red Cross, and several UN officials have called for an independent investigation into the death.
A Health System in Crisis
The killing of Dr. al-Bursh comes at a time when Gaza’s healthcare system is nearing total collapse. The ongoing conflict, severe shortages of medicine and equipment, and regular bombings of medical facilities have left hospitals struggling to function.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, over 500 health workers have been killed or injured since the start of recent hostilities. Dozens of ambulances have been targeted, and several hospitals have been partially or completely destroyed.
In this context, the loss of a highly trained, experienced, and selfless doctor like Dr. al-Bursh has a multiplying effect.
"He trained many of us," said one young orthopedic surgeon who worked under him. "Now, without him, we have lost guidance in one of the most difficult times of our lives."
Personal Testimonies: More Than a Doctor
Stories of Dr. al-Bursh’s kindness and dedication are pouring in from all corners of Palestinian society.
"I remember when my brother was injured during a protest in 2018. Dr. Adnan treated him late at night without even asking for payment," said Umm Fadi, a Gaza City resident. "He just wanted people to get better."
Others remember him as a man who brought light to dark times. His laughter, his calm voice during operations, and his words of encouragement to younger doctors are now treasured memories.
He also worked closely with international medical teams, helping them understand the unique challenges of operating in Gaza. Many foreign doctors who volunteered in Gaza over the years came away with deep respect for his knowledge and professionalism.
A Target on Healthcare
The targeting of healthcare workers in Gaza has become a troubling trend. According to international law, medical personnel are protected under the Geneva Conventions. They are considered neutral and should be allowed to operate freely, even during war.
Yet, in Gaza, many doctors have been arrested, injured, or killed. Hospitals have been raided. Medical warehouses have been bombed.
Dr. al-Bursh’s arrest and death raise serious questions: Why was a doctor detained while working? What protections exist for health workers in conflict zones? And what message does this send to those who dedicate their lives to saving others?
Demand for Accountability
Palestinian leaders are demanding an international investigation. The Ministry of Health has appealed to the World Health Organization and the International Criminal Court to look into the case.
"We need answers. We need justice," said a spokesperson for the Ministry. "Doctors are not soldiers. They carry stethoscopes, not weapons."
The lack of transparency around his death has led to fears of mistreatment or negligence in detention. Human rights groups argue that if Israel has nothing to hide, it should release the full details and return his body to his family.
A Family Left Behind
Dr. al-Bursh is survived by his wife and five children. They have not been allowed to see his body or hold a proper funeral. Their grief is deepened by the absence of closure.
"He was my hero," said his son, Ahmed, in a brief statement. "I want the world to know who he was and what they took from us."
His family is calling on the international community to pressure Israel into returning his body and conducting a fair investigation.
A Legacy That Lives On
Despite the tragedy, many believe that Dr. al-Bursh’s legacy will live on. His students continue to perform surgeries using techniques he taught them. His writings and medical papers are being shared across Palestinian medical schools.
Efforts are underway to rename a wing of al-Shifa Hospital in his honor. Medical associations are also proposing annual scholarships in his name for young Palestinians studying medicine.
"He may be gone, but his spirit remains in every life he touched," said Dr. al-Jaafarawi.
