Nigeria Declares Security Emergency as President Tinubu Orders Major Force Expansion

Post by : Saif Nasser

Nigeria is facing a very difficult moment as violent attacks continue to rise across the country. This week, President Bola Tinubu declared a nationwide security emergency and announced several strong steps to protect citizens. His speech was broadcast across the country, and he described the situation as urgent and unacceptable.

President Tinubu said that Nigeria’s police force will recruit 20,000 new officers. This will increase the total number of police officers to 50,000, which he believes is necessary to deal with the growing threat of armed groups. He also said that National Youth Service Corps camps will be used to train these new recruits, helping them join the force more quickly. Tinubu ordered that many officers currently assigned to VIP security duties should be removed from those roles and sent to dangerous areas where they are needed the most. Before deployment, they will receive fast but effective retraining so they can handle high-risk situations.

The president also approved the Department of State Services (DSS) to deploy trained forest guards. These guards will enter deep forest areas where many armed groups are hiding. Tinubu ordered the DSS to hire more personnel so they can fully cover these areas. In his speech, he warned criminal groups that the government will no longer allow them to hide or escape. His message was clear: “There will be no more hiding places for agents of evil.”

This major announcement comes after a series of deadly attacks in several states, including Kebbi, Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Yobe, and Kwara. Many civilians were either killed or kidnapped in these attacks. The rising violence has caused fear and anger among citizens, and many communities feel unsafe even in their homes.

Despite the challenges, Tinubu praised the security forces for their recent rescue operations. He noted that 24 schoolgirls were rescued in Kebbi and 38 worshippers were freed in Kwara. He also promised that all remaining hostages, including the students kidnapped in Niger state, will be brought home safely. According to him, the government will not rest until every kidnapped person is rescued.

Tinubu also urged the Nigerian parliament to review the country’s security laws. He asked lawmakers to consider allowing individual states to establish their own police forces. Many leaders have been demanding this for years, saying local security can help respond faster to crime. Tinubu also told religious institutions to remain alert and to request security protection during gatherings, especially since places of worship have become targets in many attacks.

Another important issue the president raised was the ongoing conflict between farmers and herders. Tinubu called on herder groups to embrace modern ranching instead of open grazing. He also instructed them to surrender illegal weapons to the authorities. According to him, this step is necessary to reduce clashes and prevent more loss of life.

While addressing the nation, Tinubu offered condolences to families who have lost loved ones. He also honored the bravery of Nigeria’s soldiers, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba, who recently lost his life in the line of duty. The president said that Nigeria’s patience should not be mistaken for weakness. He warned that anyone attempting to threaten the country will face strong resistance.

This security emergency marks one of President Tinubu’s most serious actions since taking office. Many Nigerians are hopeful that these steps will bring change, while others believe stronger community support and economic opportunities are also needed to reduce crime. What remains clear is that the country is fighting a dangerous wave of violence, and the coming months will show whether these new measures can restore peace and safety.
