Tiger Woods, who serves as host of the Hero World Challenge, will not take part in this year’s tournament set for December 4–7 at Albany in the Bahamas, organisers confirmed when they published the final player list. The announcement ends speculation over whether Woods might appear as one of the late exemptions.
Three entries were left open when the initial field was revealed weeks ago, prompting hopes that Woods could occupy an exemption spot if his condition allowed. Those expectations have been tempered: following a lumbar disc replacement procedure, the 15-time major champion has not been medically cleared to resume competitive play and no firm return date has been provided.
Woods’ recent operation adds to a string of significant medical interventions. In March he underwent surgery to repair a ruptured left Achilles tendon, and he has previously faced multiple procedures after the serious leg injuries sustained in his 2021 vehicle crash. The back operation is the latest step in an extended rehabilitation process.
His most recent start in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event was the British Open in July 2024, where he did not make the cut. Since then Woods has limited his public schedule and centred his efforts on recovery rather than competition.
With Woods absent, organisers finalised a 20-player field by naming Jordan Spieth, Billy Horschel and Akshay Bhatia to the remaining positions. The trio join a compact roster of top-ranked players at the annual invitational, which supports the Tiger Woods Foundation. Woods’ role as host continues to lend the event significant profile despite his non-participation.
The tournament still promises a high-calibre lineup. Two-time defending champion Scottie Scheffler is set to defend his title, while Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama — the 2016 winner — is also entered. The Hero World Challenge is known for its intimate field and elite competition among leading global players.
Beyond sporting honours, the event raises funds for youth education and development programmes run by the Tiger Woods Foundation. The foundation’s initiatives include scholarships, learning opportunities and mentorship aimed at expanding access to education through golf-related activities.
Supporters worldwide remain invested in Woods’ comeback prospects. His competitive absence is notable given his influence on the sport, and many fans and peers are optimistic that continued rehabilitation will allow a selective return to play when medically appropriate.
Woods’ record — including 15 major championships and numerous Tour victories — secures his standing in golf history. Even while not competing, his ongoing leadership through the foundation and as a public figure sustains his impact on the game.
Looking ahead, attention will turn to how Woods manages his recovery into 2025 and whether improved health will permit appearances in exhibitions or select tournaments. For now, the Hero World Challenge will proceed without its host as players and spectators mark the event in his honour.
