In a commanding performance, the Oklahoma City Thunder triumphed over the Portland Trail Blazers with a score of 122-95, marking their ninth consecutive victory. The standout for the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, delivered an impressive 37 points, alongside seven assists and five rebounds to propel his team's ongoing success.
This latest clash served as a rematch, recalling their previous encounter on November 5 when the Blazers had handed the Thunder their only defeat this season. From the outset, Oklahoma City seized the momentum; Gilgeous-Alexander set the tone by making an early steal and subsequently nailing a step-back jumper within three minutes, establishing a lead that would remain unchallenged.
By the end of the first quarter, Gilgeous-Alexander had accumulated 17 points, showcasing his prowess by shooting six for seven. His deft plays, including two steals and an assist, enabled the Thunder to surge ahead with a 21-point advantage. Meanwhile, the Blazers struggled offensively, failing to score on their last four attempts during the quarter, as Oklahoma City capitalized on their five turnovers resulting in 11 quick points.
As the game progressed, the Thunder maintained their dominance; the Blazers couldn't pull within 16 points as the lead expanded to a staggering 36. Ajay Mitchell particularly shone off the bench, scoring 20 points and hitting all eight of his shots, contributing to the team's commendable shooting percentage of 52.3%. Further support came from Isaiah Joe with 10 points, while Isaiah Hartenstein dominated the boards with 15 rebounds.
As the fourth quarter approached, the Thunder led by 28 points, allowing key players like Gilgeous-Alexander and Luguentz Dort to rest, given their significant lead. This victory showcased their unbeaten 8-0 home record and highlighted their impressive 17 wins in just 18 games, signaling a powerful start to their season.
On the flip side, Portland faced offensive difficulties, managing only 37% shooting from the field and a dismal 25.5% from beyond the arc. Jerami Grant was the top scorer for the Blazers with 21 points, while Deni Avdija scored 11 but struggled overall. This defeat marked the Blazers' fifth loss in six games, underscoring their challenges in matching the Thunder’s vigorous and swift gameplay.
With this victory, the Thunder showcased their impressive teamwork, shooting accuracy, and strong leadership from Gilgeous-Alexander, reinforcing his position as a vital asset for Oklahoma City. With contributions from the entire team and effective performances by bench players like Mitchell, the Thunder continue to stand as one of the most challenging opponents in the NBA this season.
