Thiel Liquidates Nvidia Holdings as AI Bubble Risks Loom

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Thiel Macro LLC, the hedge fund managed by Peter Thiel, has completely divested its shares in Nvidia Corp., a significant move that reflects rising apprehensions over a potential AI bubble. Thiel, renowned for his early investment in Facebook and pivotal role in the 'PayPal Mafia,' indicates a cautious perspective on the AI-fueled momentum that propelled Nvidia to record highs.

The fund sold all 537,742 shares of Nvidia, valued at almost $100 million as of the end of September. Following this transaction, Thiel Macro LLC's portfolio will predominantly consist of substantial investments in Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp., alongside a minor stake in Tesla Inc., representing a strategic pivot amidst growing doubts concerning AI investments.

Nvidia's ascension to become the world's most valuable company, surpassing a $5 trillion valuation, has garnered attention from both investors and skeptics. Alongside Thiel, major players such as SoftBank Group have also slashed their Nvidia holdings lately. SoftBank’s recent $5.83 billion sell-off in October aimed to redirect investments towards other AI initiatives.

Simultaneously, Michael Burry, famed for predicting the 2008 financial crisis, has adopted a cautious view on Nvidia and Palantir Technologies, acquiring put options to bet on stock price declines. Burry's caution over market bubbles and worries regarding financial methods employed by leading AI firms intensify the discussion on the overheating of the AI sector.

As the AI landscape transforms, investor interest remains high, though uncertainty looms regarding the timeline for profitability in these ventures. The hesitance displayed by investors like Thiel and Burry signals a mounting skepticism regarding the durability of the current AI surge.

With the AI domain in constant flux, market participants are vigilant for indicators of persistence or potential downturns. Thiel’s full withdrawal from Nvidia serves as a stark reminder that even experienced investors are gearing up for possible market volatility ahead.
